e8400 at 4.0 or a q9550?

which is better? i am thinking about getting the quad, but my e8400 runs games very well. i am also currently running two 4890's in xfire. so i am not sure how much of an upgrade the q9550 would be. should i just keep the e8400 for a few more months, then upgrade to a i9 or i7 at that time rather than getting a 9550 now.

Keep your E8400. Wait until january to upgrade to an i9.
Too late for Q9550. I'd say get an i7 or wait for i9 like the above poster said.
Id say get a Q9550 and overclock to 4.0. If you go with I7 or I9 you will need a new mobo and ram. I dont think its worth the extra cash the moment

Too late?! Are you even serious? A Q9550 would last a very long while. Well beyond the Nehalem generation.

Hell, even his E8400 might do it.

I game a good deal. And I haven't felt the need to upgrade my E8400 yet. I doubt it will happen in 2010, too.

I upgrade out of necessity, not out of the "oh-so-shiny-stuff" itch. And if this is the OP's case, then your E8400 is a wonderful gaming chip.

I think you're right that it's best to keep the E8400 until you upgrade to the i9 or i7. After all, the only real benefit the Q9550 will give you is the ability to play games like GTA4 with better performance than you'd get now with the E8400.

This way, you'll have this little bit of extra money to make the i9 or i7 build that much better.

if you can get one cheap enough it would strech the legs of your current machine long enough.

i would say q9550 but im biased tbh

you should be able to get one to 4ghz or more so speed wise you wont lose anything just gain more cores.

i didnt notice any change in speed going from an [email protected] to this one but it can do soooo much more at once and still not get bogged down.

Better for what?

IMHO hold on to the e8400 for a bit and go i7 or better when you can, assuming your mostly a gamer.

Edit: lol guess i took awhile to respond.
upgrade to a quad

q9550, i5, i7, they all work. the thing is if you go with the q9550, you don't need a new mobo and ram. also, q9550 e0 stepping overclocks to 4.0 ghz easy

if you can get a q9550 for $170 (microcenter), sell your e8400 for at least $100, it's a $70 investment well made
thanks for all the responses and tidbits. just one more question. would the freezer 7 pro be a good cooler for the q9550?

yes that would be a perfectly fine cooler. i have my q9550 E0 revision oc'ed to 3.4ghz at 1.2volts. i can probably go a little lower but my mobo has vdroop.

with nothing lapped, my tuniq tower 120 keeps my temps around 35 C idle, 55 C load, with about 23 C ambient. i'm using the below-par tuniq TX-1 thermal paste too.

f7p is a great little cooler m8, one got my 4300 to 3.6ghz

i cant see you getting to 4ghz with one on a quad but i can see you hitting 3.5 ish.

even if you upgrade that you will get mounting plates for other sockets too should you change that later.

mine hit 65c this morning @4ghz on 1.3v but that was in a room temp of 27c so....i like it toasty in the morning me

if you have a microcenter near you, you can get a Q9550 for 169.99 which is really cheap.
not to steal the thread, but curious to what the E0 means and how i would tell that out, im looking to get a E8400 and getting rid of my Q8200 and wanna know how to tell which one to get, or are they all "E0"?
If you have a good 775 setup get a Q9550 you cant go wrong. A Q9550 @ 4ghz will do anything you want it to.
thing is i dont think i have a good setup mobo isnt the best for OC'ing. and dont wanna spend money on one unless its one i really want. E8400 sounds solid and sounds better than my 8200 so can at least break even for getting the 8400
I have the highest respect for overclocking and i have done it myself. Still curious question, don't overclocking shorten your cpu life? Or it really depends on how you take care of it? Just wondered.
why is that? i know i need one and plan on grabbing one here soon but why would you prefer it? will that help things out?
