E8400 cores getting temps in the 100's celsuis! Help!

758 Views 24 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mocha989
When I'm just surfing the internet, I get from 39-42 in my cores, 33 or so in my cpu. However, when I turn on TF2 it surges through the roof, reaching the hundreds.

The cooler on my cpu has thermal "paste" on it, should I use actual thermal paste? What else could it be the problem other than this?

I'm using speedfan btw.

e: Please answer fast, because I'm going to the store to buy thermal paste and if that's a bad thing to do I may end up ****ing myself over. tia

What is an HSF? And are my idle temps good or too high?
That's very bad. My guess is your cooler is not properly seated on the CPU or you are getting a false reading. Fill in the details for your system (user CP --> system).

Oh, and I'm confused over the "paste" and actual thermal paste distinction???

edit: HSF = heat sink = cooler

idle temps are about right, but that doesn't mean much.
Well, the cooler had some material on the bottom that I thought was thermal paste as people were telling me to not worry about it because most cpu coolers come with it. The same temps are read with coretemp and realtemp.

My cooler seems ok. What is an HSF?
I don't know, I didn't buy anything that looks like an HSF. There is a heatsink on the moteherboard, should I bu y a fan for that?
Your cooler is your HSF. By reseating, they mean taking it out and reinstalling it.

A tip- the push pins requre a LOT of force to go in properly. When you have done it right, the cooler will not budge at all.

EDIT: No, your chipset cooler probably doesnt need a fan.
Oh, my HSF is the one that came with my E8400. It's properly connected and I can see the fan spinning, so
If I do that, will I still have to put thermal paste in?
What people are worried about is that stock HSF that came with the E8400 isn't fully seated on the CPU - its got those little spring-loaded pins, they are a pita to get in all the way. If they aren't in all the way you won't have enough pressure holding the HSF against the CPU.

A stock E8400 won't generate enough heat to get anywhere near that hot with a properly-seated HSF. So unless you've got it overclocked like mad, there's something preventing the CPU from transferring heat to your HSF.

Oh boy you have a lot to learn son. Yes oyu have to put thermal paste on it. When you look at the heatsink was there 3 strips of a substance on the bottom of it or was it just clean?? if it was clean then yes you need thermal paste. pic your selve up some OCZ freeze or Arctic Silver MX- 2
Seems like the HSF is not touching the CPU hard enough. Make sure they click in and its tight. 100c is totally not exceptable. Also you might need to set a offset in speedfan, by -15 on each core,, soo actually your temp reached 85c ,,,

This is just a guess, you might not have to do negative offset just depends on your config....

You should count your blessing that, that CPU isn't toast. I think the max TJ MAX is 85c ,,

soo I believe you hit 85c not 100c , 85c is not acceptable either. You should get load in 50's and 60's with the cheapest HSF you can find. Something is wrong you need to take off the heatsink wipe the thermal paste. Put very tiny little thermal paste and seat the heatsink and make sure its clicked in and tight and unmoveable. Then come back to us lets see what your temps are ,, gl,

It's not overclocked at all.

Well, after I reseat the HSF, should I put thermal paste or will the thermal matter on the cpu cooler suffice?

there was 3 strips of a substance on the boyyom. Should I still buy thermal paste or no?

I would that stuff is terrible. I would get some 100% rubbing alcohol and take those strips off. Wiat for it to dry then put some new stuff on but a very small amount. Also when putting the cooler on push down the pins in a diagonal fashion dont do it by corner do it by diagonal so that 2 corners are going in at the same time but not the side by side pins the ones across from each other.

ed he is useing speedfan i wonder if he turned down the cpu fan by mistake.
Putting on better thermal paste (follow the instructions on Artic's website if you go with their paste) is a good idea. But, the difference from the stock paste to high end paste is on the order of 5 deg C, so that's not your only problem. Now if its not seated all the way or if the paste has gotten dirty, cat hair in it or something like that, then that would explain the super-high temps. A ton of dust in the HSF fins would also be bad.
