I've had a look into debian and fedora but I'm looking for something more "out-of-the-box friendly" I guess for 24/7. Basically I don't want to have to mess with broken packages all the time and fixing broken things manually after updates. No doubt I will have a play with Arch or something in the future, but it won't be my daily install.

I used Jaunty as a daily some years ago and it was great, then I went back to windows for a while. Recently I've been testing 11.04/11.10/12.04 beta2 and they all have problems with unity. 11.10 would only boot every 2nd time. 12.04 boots to a blank screen now I've updated it.

I like the look of Linux Mint 12 KDE so I'll have a look at that next I think.

BTW, I use Linux some. I can haz?
added!

one ive also tried and liked was linux mint debian edition, it has all the 'out of box' friendlyness plus debians larger package repo. it also runs on a rolling release, and thats always nice. used it for awhile but now i use mostly debian

Just a heads up, you can change the Desktop Environment / Window Manager with ease if you don't like Unity, without the need to reinstall a new spin, or another distro. Just seems like a waste of time to install different distro because of Desktop Environment / Window Managers.

Also, packages don't break too often anymore in most distros, so you'd be safe with just about any. I do daily updates with my Arch install and weekly updates with my Gentoo install and in the 4 years running Arch, it's only 'broke' once but only because I didn't read the update notes to a certain package which needed manual intervention before a reboot. But other than that, never had any issues with broken stuff. So even with anything like Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Fedora, Etc you shouldn't have any issues.

worked fine for me. all it is is that you do tons of updates instead of going linux mint 11, 12 and then that way you never reinstall. there is the worry that some stuff wont work after an update, but i dont think its as bad as its made to be

Yes, very good point, I have no idea why I haven't done that lol

i always suggest giving debian a shot. its not as hard as many seem to think, and i find has all the best quilitys of linux in one. its also community driven, not sure if that matters to you

No, there closly related and many are the same but no. Most debian packages work, but many dont and have to be twieked so the repos are differant.
