When we're viewing our reputation points here on OCN, the title of the thread is always shortened down to 20-21 characters (minus ellipse) regardless if using the Fixed View or the Wide View. Even in the Fixed View it looks like there's enough space to fit at least 50 characters. In the Wide View with Firefox maximized in a 1680x1050 resolution, there's enough space to fit at 102 characters. For example, here's what it looks like when I'm viewing the Wide View, but without Firefox maximized:
There happens to be room here for exactly 84 characters.
After measuring the Fixed View, I see enough room for exactly 51 characters, which could fit a thread title that exceeds this limit by using the ellipse, but if the thread title just happened to be 51 characters, then the ellipse would not be used.
Now, the full title of the thread shown here is
"What should the load temp be with this setup?" (45 characters). But it was limited to 20 characters (excluding the ellipse). But yet even with the Fixed View, all 45 characters would obviously fit just fine.
So, my suggestion is to increase the character limit so that it's not possible for any thread title to be shortened like this unless there's is simply not enough space for it. Obviously, I don't understand how it works, so I'm not able to properly explain what I am suggesting, but I'm just wishing that I could see the entire thread title here, unless of course I'm using the Fixed View.
One of the other reasons I don't like it the way it is right now is that if I want to see the full title, then I have to click on the thread in this area which artificially increases is it's view count. Not only that, but if I want to look at it before I'm ready to get to it when I'm going through my thread subscriptions with new replies (that is, if that Repped post is in a thread that has new replies since I was last in it), then I either have to wait, or I have to just click on it and accept that I'm viewing that thread ahead of older ones (I always begin with the oldest new reply first).
So that's my suggestion. I'd like this character limit to be removed, or at least significantly extended to like 100 characters (or 110).
