We've already seen the Atom used in a few somewhat surprising places, but Intel now looks to really be making an earnest push to expand its base, with it introducing four new specialized Atom processors (and two new system controllers to go along with 'em) that it hopes will find their way into in-car devices, internet phones, and a whole host of industrial-strength applications. Relying on the same 45nm manufacturing process, the new Atom Z5xx series processors expectedly aren't too radically different from the average Atom, with them clocking in between 1.1GHz and 1.6GHz, and boasting a TDP rating of 2.0 or 2.2 watts, although they do have some "embedded lifecycle support" thrown in for good measure. In related news, Intel has also announced that it'll be outsourcing "some" Atom manufacturing to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (or TSMC), which apparently marks the first time that Intel has licensed its CPU core to a foundry.

Very interesting. I wonder if this means I'll be able to OC the cellphone that these will be in, lol.

Too big to be in anything real small for now. Will eat up too much juice.

You don't eat juice, silly.

Icwutudidthar.

This would be pretty cool. Cheap, reliable chips for your car instead of these ridiculously overpriced ECU's.

At first this will go in luxury cars to run media devices and MP3 players, and be overpriced like hell. Still, it might not be too long until we all have some sort of desktop chip in our cars.

Come on AMD, where are you with that neo chip!

I was more thinking it would go into the more core parts of a car's computer to work with systems that prevent accidents and the like. With an actual processor that can handle the software / systems designed for such tasks, it makes it all the more plausable to the common vehicle, even in the near future. And then some.

Btw, there are already programs that handle MP3 players, in-car voice communication and such like in my car. It's called Microsoft Sync. Voice Command ftw.

Oh my, i just hope the cars won't run M$ along with the Atom...Imagine a dashboard error telling you that your steering is locked, and you have to close your windows and re-open them to re-gain control...
