[Engadget] Kinetic HD:Hub HTPC gets hip with Core i7, square with HD DVD

We know, vendors have to get rid of these leftover HD DVD drives somehow, but it's still a tad comical to see brand new systems shipping with support for a format that perished over a year ago. Nevertheless, we're still pretty jazzed about Kinetic's HD:Hub, as the built-in HD DVD drive is actually a dual-format player that handles the very much alive Blu-ray format as well. Furthermore, this one comes with a potent Core i7 processor, up to four TV tuners, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, a Creative X-Fi Titanium sound card and Windows Vista runnin' the show. There's no mention of a price, but we get the feeling that these are mostly reserved for those across the pond.

Not bad for a prebuilt HTPC, except the i7 base setup.

It should be rocking an E5200 or x2 xx50e setup.

As you don't need the i7 power in a HTPC.

exactly , any 775(or amd) quad would be overkill for a htpc, so i7 is just un neccessary

The only reason I could see dropping a 775 or AM2+ quad in this would be for the possible 8x recording.
But at that, you would also need something better than SATA 300mbs data rate to record all that media at once. Or 3 raid cards.

And I wouldn't put in a Core i7. If you are going Quad, a Q8200 or a Phenom II x4 810 or a Phenom x4 9550. (If you can find one.)

That Looks like an impressive specification. I bet the price is pretty high though. You're often much better off building your own HTPC.
I suppose if you were going to do a lot of converting/transcoding etc of media files, an i7 would be nice to have.

I'd get a tricore Phenom. The 8650 is $90 or so and that thing is actually really good.

Yeah, but when you find a Phenom 9550 on Fleabay for 80$ shipped w/ the Heatpipe AM2+ cooler..its a steal.

Many a machines were shipped with those things. So now people are ditching them for Deneb CPUs.
