Well, this is going to be fun! Microsoft, which hired former Wal-Mart exec David Porter to be its corporate vice president of retail stores back in February, has just confirmed that stores are, indeed, on the way -- and soon. COO Kevin Turner confirmed the plans at the Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans yesterday, saying the stores are due to open this fall (maybe to coincide with the launch of Windows 7?) -- and what's more, Redmond's bringing the fight directly to Apple's doorstep. "Stay tuned, because we're going to have some retail stores opened up that are opened up right next door to Apple stores." Things are about to get saucy, people.

That's awesome, it seems like Microsoft has been heading in a much better direction lately (win7, ie, that office movie, this ballz move)

Exactly what I was thinking.

My guess is that if they don't make their own brand of PC that they'll sell others like HP.

They also have the Zune, and they could possibly sell smart phones with Windows Mobile on it.

Additionally, they have plenty of software they can sell in stores, and could give tech support for problems with Windows.

I guess I can see that they'd have some reason for opening a retail store, seeing the success of the Apple stores. Not sure I'd ever need/want to shop there though.

With Windows 7 we can clearly see that MC is going almost same direction as Apple.

Where can I send my resume? As fail as it is, it would be easy as hell and Id probably get a discount. Maybe Id even get to try out some new stuffs.

I also dont really see it as MS competing with Apple stores. If that was their main concern, they would have made these MS stores years ago. Its not like they dont have the resources to do it or havent had the resources for years.

It isn't nearly elitist enough to be in an Apple store. Especially considering he didn't pay triple the normal price for it.

There Will be Blood!! The truth is this might be a really good idea, because if your computer is just sitting under your desk you don't really care what name is on it, the only name you really care about is the one that pops up on the screen when you start it up, in most cases Microsoft, so to most Americans it probably makes sense to buy the machine from the people that make it useful. And, when you by a Mac you actually buy two computers, they burn one and give the other to you thats why they cost twice as much

Wow...

I know who I will be prank calling at 16:59 (or whenever the store closes) to get help with odd things. ("Why can't I delete my porn? you guys are evil!" or "All my Icons are gone!" is also very amusing.)

But I think they will do well. As mentioned they have more than enough things to sell. Also I hope they put (if they are smart) a Surface Computer in each store. That would be great fun to play with alone! Hell they could make their own PCs if they wanted to. Just buy a PC maker and slap the old Microsoft logo on it.

I actually like this idea, and feel if Microsoft did their homework right this isn't going to be so much fail. I actually enjoy going into the Apple/Sony stores but I never buy stuff in there, which is probably going to happen with this retail store.
