[Engadget] OLED market set to skyrocket in 2011, says DisplaySearch

You've seen the prototypes tucked away in trade show corners, and you've seen the demise of existing generation technologies -- it doesn't take an industry expert to realize that the door is wide open for OLED to walk through. According to a new report from -- who else? -- industry experts, the OLED lighting market is set to boom in 2011, with OLED revenues expected to surpass PMOLED displays in the 2013 / 2014 time frame. Specifically in the OLED TV market, manufacturers are scrambling to assemble large-screen OLED TVs that are even close to affordable, and estimates we've personally heard put those on the market just after the next decade begins. Clearly, the biggest hindrance from OLED domination right now is the prohibitive pricing, but once those XEL-1s are given away inside King Size cereal boxes, we'll really be onto something.

The thing is...

People are not going to buy new TVs everytime some new technology comes out. HDTV sales have been growing quite a bit lately, no? So the market for OLED might be shrinking with each passing day.

I'd love an OLED set, but I've already got two large HDTVs in my home. I'll be real surprised if OLED sales "skyrocket". But then again, sales of OLED are nonexistant, so selling 1,000 OLED sets in a year might be considered skyrocketing sales, who knows?

You gotta look at the context though. There is a big market of people with HD tvs but there is most likely a huge remaining market of people who don't. They need new tvs. Also, people who like to upgrade and people who just plain need a new tv will probably buy into OLED if it's comparatively priced.

I doubt lots of people like you or me who have the latest and greatest now will be tempted to put down lots of money for a new TV in 2 yrs, but we're kinda the minority.

Agreed. I think this is a bit of a careless prediction. The LCD market is flourishing. Everyone has one, everyone wants one. They're being produced by the bucket, and they are DIRT cheap nowadays. You can grab a 1080p 22" for under 200$.

I dont think anyone should be predicting skyrocketing sales of anything with the todays economy.

Interesting. I'd say it's cell phones and ipods.

Its not just televisions, its screens of all kind and their will be a huge market when it becomes affordable. Especially for phones, mp3 players and stuff like that.
FuNkDrSpOt: congratulations on your 1,000th post btw.

I have a 1366*768 Insignia LCD and my samsung monitor that I use to watch stuff in my room. neither of these would really be described as "high end" but i am completely happy with them for now. But by the time oled displays have been out, gained some market share, come down in price, and of course improved a bit since they were first introduced on a mainstream scale: it will be time for me to upgrade because my stuff will be old.

(I really love my Samsung monitor too, im gonna keep it as long as i can. I wouldnt really buy another monitor until i can get something like a 2560x1600 2ms w/ 120Hz refresh rate OLED....at a reasonable price)
I think OLED tech missed the US digital TV upgrade window.

Right now I see OLEDs being used first in low-power devices - phones, cameras, etc. - where their superior efficiency is a big advantage. But large screens are going to take a while longer. LCD technology is mature and dirt cheap.

Where OLEDs have an advantage in big displays is the gaming crowd. No LCD lag!
Hey wait a minute... I read the Engadget piece and followed the link to their source. This isn't about displays at all - it's about OLED for general purpose lighting.
I can't wait for OLED to come out, then maybe I can get a regular LCD.

I am in that group funk refered to.

I have 3 CRT TV's that work perfectly fine. The "newest" one is 5-6 years old. Yea I would love to get a LCD, but can't justify the $1000 "just to have one".
Hopefully in 2 years, I can get a good 46" LCD for about half of what they are now.
i'd be more excited about OLED tech if i hadn't heard somewhere that they have a CRAPPY lifespan. :S

Make 'em cheap, make 'em light and thing, and then give me one to buy.
My iRiver Clix gen2 has an OLED display
the viewing angle is exactly as a CRT display
love it!
Here is a good read for anyone who does not know much about OLED.
There are a lot of people who bought those 1024x768/1366x768 LCD or Projection TV's back in the early 2000's who would be willing to upgrade in the next few years.

There's always a market for enthusiasts!
