[Engadget] Scientists shoot down malaria-carrying mosquitoes with frickin' lasers

Seriously, is there anything a laser can't do? A team of mad scientists in Washington have concocted a system that could essentially eliminate malaria-carrying mosquitoes with lasers, and the whole thing can be built from parts sourced on eBay. The so-called mosquito laser is credited to an idea from Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who worked with Edward Teller, the "architect of the original plan to use lasers to shield America from the rain of Soviet nuclear arms." In theory, at least, the technology could one day be used to draw a laser barrier of sorts around a village. Of course, the trick is to make the lasers powerful enough to smoke the bugs without harming humans -- any of you Earthlings up for a clinical trial or two?

Man... Anything with lasers being fired is freakin awesome. Very Interesting.
Now up the beam and set the target on the in-laws...
I'm still going with Dr. Evils idea of sharks with laser beams ontop of their heads.

How do they target only the Malaria-carrying ones? I mean other mosquitoes are really important to the environment.
How much continues power would this take to have a constant barrier over a circumference that could be dozens, if not hundreds of miles? I don't see this being very practical. Besides, I doubt seriously that the interconnect of beams could be wide enough and tight enough to eliminate even 50% of the space a little insect could enter in. Then there is always the possibility of it causing cancer, and other environmental mishaps that having a constant array of laser could have. Hate to be a nay sayer... but this looks like FAIL to me.

The only thing I got out of that read is that mosquitoes are annoying and can carry disease. Therefore, fire up the frickin' lasers...
