Good news...?

The Minideck USB-to-DVI / VGA / HDMI (video only) adapter utilizes the DisplayLink DL-195 chip, which provides support for resolutions as high 2,048 x 1,152, so 1080p and 1,920 x 1,200 LCD monitors are well taken care of. Best of all, this thing doesn't require a Core i7 rig to operate, so your 5 year old corporate laptop should be plenty to handle the rigors of powering a 24-inch LCD via a dusty old USB socket. It's all yours right now for $99.95.

So is this eyeinfinity for the masses? I mean for everyone w/o an 5 sereies ATI card and Nvidia? A quick check at the sewell'ss website and I found this.

You can connect as many as 6 Minidecks to your system to connect up to six displays to your computer. You can set all screens to 'mirror mode' or 'extended desktop mode.'

Minimal System Requirements

Minideck does not require your computer to be very advanced in order to work. It just requires you have a 1.2 GHz or higher processor, 30MB of disk space, and 256 MB RAM.

I don't think it will be eyefinity for the masses just yet. Yes this allows multiple monitors, but people had multiple monitors before but could not play games the way eyefinity does, the games have to be coded for it first.

So could it be? Yes. But, is it? No, not yet at least.
If you wouldn't mind clicking this link and checking out the you tube video.. http://sewelldirect.com/USB-to-DVI-E...Resolution.asp At the end of the video he has a few monitors set-up and most are running like a seperate monitor? Just interesting at the least....
You have to realize though that USB throughput will limit these things drastically. USB goes at 480mbps per root hub, and each root hub is connected to several of your motherboard's connectors. So if you want to run at the max resolution you need to be sure that you're installing it on a root hub that isn't used for anything else. Simply using different connectors will not always help.
Yes it will allow you to have multiple monitors, like I said, but it will not allow you to stretch the game image along the monitors the way eyefinity does. The game will still have to be coded for it first.

What this does is the equivalent of adding an old PCI video card to add a couple monitors to your system.

Also in eyefinity all the monitors are being run off of the HD5XXX card, and I highly doubt these USB cards are strong enough to game at 1920*1200, or probably not even 1280*1024.

All this is doing is allowing windows to use multiple monitors, just because you have multiple monitors does not mean you can have eyefinity.
Nuts..... Sounded promising, but as usual too good to be true. Does this get filed under 'PC gamer gets screwed........ Again'

Why would I buy six of these when I could get even a HD5970 at that price? The HD5000s will do a better job too. For one or two more monitors, maybe, but for six more, no deal.
Well maybe people playing wow or their favorite mmorpg can use this? I guess only be good if you were trying to play 3 accounts from one CPU... If it's even possible?

Would also mean any other USB device plugged in would be unusable if it needs a lot of bandwidth. Webcams? Decimated. Especially since USB can only send or receive at a time, not both.

Exactly. Most likely the other devices will still work (slowly), and the video will lag like crazy.

nothing new. There are already DP -> DVI converters out there.
