Enough Power?

602 Views 20 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  iDeal
My build arrives this week (in sig) and my only concern is that now I have added the extra GPU for PhysX (8600GTS), that my PSU might not be able to handle extra load. Any thoughts?

This is my PSU: http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=27381

Appreciate any input.

The 8600gts only uses like 50W. I wouldn't be too worried about it.
It should be fine for a desktop use, but under a full load, not so sure.

Worried now as to what will happen when I first boot it.

Don't wanna fry my rig on first boot.

That 500w PSU will be fine, no need to worry. Even if you were to overload the PSU, (you won't) all it would do is shut off, it won't kill everything.

It's a 610w PSU. So I should be fine, ja?

**Edit** Saw your edit. Cheers

Even with everything OCed and with the 8600gts doing PhysX, his system will pull 400-450W. The 610 Silencer can easily handle that.
Lol i need to put my contacts in! How did i see 500w? lol

610w could do SLI with your 260 and it would still be fine.
Really appreciate the input guys, I'm a little paranoid as it's my first build. So you may see me popping up in numerous threads with what my seem some questions that have obvious answers

Good to know I have some give with my PSU, so that I can even OC and run SLI should I feel the need. (Will deffo OC CPU/GPU at some point).

Yeah a lot of people overestimate the power that components really draw.

When my GTX 295 comes in, i'm thinking about borrowing another one and trying to fold on both of them and the CPU at the same time. I have faith that 750w will do it!

Folding only uses ~2/3 of the power used under gaming for Nvidia cards. That would be ~150W for each gtx295 to fold. It shouldn't be too much for the Corsair.

But remember, my CPU isn't working as hard gaming as it is folding. Plus, a 511 WU seems to use just as much power and gets just as hot as Crysis maxxed out according to my UPS. Shame I don't have an SLI board to test gaming too.

I didn't know the 511s were that rough. What's your UPS display with SMP going and folding on your gtx280?

Yeah, the 511's make the GPU use more power and run about 10C hotter than the others do.

Not sure about just the 280, as it's being stepped up right now. I remember doing the OCCT PSU stress test, which is Linpack for the CPU and a GPU test combined and it showed about 600w from the wall. So we'll assume 80% efficiency, so that would be 480w. Seems to me like it would work with 2 of the GTX 295's...barely.

Yeah, I wouldn't run 2 gtx295s on that unit for gaming with an OCed quad. It's seems some of the new WUs may be too much for the Corsair as well. I know from the few reviews that test [email protected] show much less power consumption than games, but it seems like that may not always be true.

You will be fine. That P&PC is great a choice. It will run all that with ease.
I was thinking about "borrowing" a 780i and another GTX 295 from fry's just to see if it would work, i mean..worst thing that'll probably happen would be the PSU shutting off.

If you push the tx750 beyond ~66A on the 12V you'll start to see out of spec ripple on that rail. It's unlikely it will shut off in that situation. If it's only slightly out of spec it won't cause any immediate damage. It's pretty unlikely you'll go over 66A on the 12V with something like that though. Still, even if it ran fine I wouldn't do it long term.

Sorry for the OT.

Your fine with your PSU , no worries. The hard part is getting that card to do physics with nvidia drivers. Got to use a certain driver, I would go for latest one.. gl,
