Epic lap jobs! Post your pics!

I am just interested in some super fine lapping jobs done by members here at the OCN. I found this one via Google, at this address. Admittedly, I have yet to do my first lap! Soon!

Please note that:
"Shiny" does not necessarily mean "flat",
and "flat" doesn't necessarily mean "shiny",
but "flat" AND "shiny" make for a great lap job.

Flatness is indicated by showing an optical reflection (upon the lapped surface) of any object that is distant from the lapped surface, and seeing that the reflected image is in no way distorted (stretched, smushed, altered in shape or self-relative dimensions at all). Corners should never be worn down, as the point is to achieve as much surface contact between heat sink and CPU "die" as possible.

FYI, (icydk) Here on the OCN are a great many resources for lapping info.
Now post your epic lapping pics! Anyone done a super job, of which they are very proud?

Yeah that pic is obviously photoshopped...
It is, theres no way in hell a reflection acts like that.

Anyone ever used 2500+ grit?
I have heard member saying they just walked into Homedepot, asked for a scrap of glass, and got it free, is this true?

best thing to do would to just try it really, they may have scraps from custom cuts that are going to get thrown away

My uncle owns a small glass shop, and he has all kinds of junk in there that can't be used for anything, but would be great for lapping. Not sure if he'd just give you a piece, but if it's going in the dumpster if it's not being given away, I don't see why not lol. I got a 2'x2' piece from him and it works just fine, if not a bit smallish.

Not sure about home depot doing that however...

It doesn't looked shopped at all. The DoF makes sense for the photograph; all he seems guilty of is using a high ISO where it wasn't needed.

No it's not sarcasm, I've seen the pic on XS before. To get that reflection he probably polished it.

Well I would hate to have to pay for a little piece of crapz. I think my parents might just have a section in the garage...

EDIT: This seems like a really really good deal:

Doesn't look photoshopped to me. That would be a heckuva good PS job, and I think I'd be able to tell. At first, I had my suspicions, but after close inspection, it seems he (or she) polished the surface quite well. Just read what he wrote in the pic.

It would be very easy to photoshop it. Very.

How big was that 2$ piece of glass wildfire?

  • Linear perspective (focal point) looks perfect.
  • Camera focus looks perfect.
  • Copper hue of reflection looks authentic.
  • Observe reflection at top of polished heat sink surface: you can see the book's knurled corner as a true reflection.
  • The edge of the book in reflection looks very real.
Like I said, heckuva PS job. Very thorough, if it's a fake. Doubt it tho.
S'pose it could be a true reflection photoshopped into the pic.
