every installer has win32 error

My friends laptop is running Vista SP1 32-bit. He has issues with his windows media player, probably codec issues. But when I try to run any installer i get the wonderful "not a valid win 32 application" error. I have tried installing xvid, divx, and the vlc media player. Every single installer says its not a proper win 32 application. It doesn't make any sense because they are 32-bit installers. I have yet to find a solution after several hours of google searching. Please help me my fellow OCN community.

can you verify the installer with an md5 checksum or other hash?
Is there some way to check file integrity through a built in windows tool? Because i cant get an MD5 checksum tool installed.
