is it safe to OC with only a 4-pin connector used instead of 8-pin?

Totally safe. Turn those clocks right on up.

i think at really high overclocks (4.5ghz for example) it would become unstable, but from what i have noticed on my Gigabyte board that using a 4 pin into the 8pin hasnt really effected it all that much. But the cpu is a lower end dual core as well and the overclock is only 600mhz to 800mhz.
