hi all, i am planing to get a 1366 board again, was thinking between the R3E or the EVga SR-2 (for a massive E-peen)

only thing is, would the SR-2 work with, lets say 2x I7 950's??

i cant afford more than that

if not i'll just get the R3E black edition, or do you guys suggest something else?

Nope !. The SR2 only works with Xeon chips, cause they have two QPI links, whereas their i7 brothers only have the 1.

AFAIK you need CPUs with dual QPI links if you're using the SR-2. Meaning that only xeon chips are compatible.

1 950 will work, but you can only use 1 950 in that board. So it seems kind of pointless.

Like Deano said, you need xeons to use both sockets as they have 2 QPI links.

Xeon is a must. IF your really pressed for cash, two E5620's would work (I believe). Other then that, there are very nice 1366 boards still being made.

I think you also need certain xeon chips that actually come with dual qpi as some only have one qpi which are xeon chips designed for single processor workstations.

The TDP for one, the different models in the Xeon line all have varying TDP's and its signified by the prefix on the chip

I'm not an Intel guy, I have no idea, but I was under the assumption that W-series Xeon chips were designed for workstation use. Which chips have dual QPI's I'm unaware of

X series chips might be the one with dual Qpi since they generally have higher QPI than the E series as well as higher clocks.

You don't have to get 2xi7-950.

You can get the 950's Xeon equivalent for the same price.

X series xeons have dual qpi links and unlocked multipliers iirc

they're the "unlocked/extreme edition/black edition" chips for the xeon line IIRC
