EDIT: I just saw the bristol ridge thread on here, so that answered my question about the excavator APUs. So I guess I'll cut to exactly what I'm trying to do...
I made a post on here not too long ago about making a budget mini-itx gaming rig with the 7870k, but I'm worried that there won't be any FM2+ APUs to upgrade to after the 7870. If I get the mobo now with the FM2+ socket, will I need to buy an AM4 socket mobo just to upgrade the CPU? Will the 7870k be the last of the flagship FM2+ desktop APUs?
The 7870k may be the last flagship APU for FM2+, yes. The 7890k was announced. It is unclear whether or not it will see wide release. My guess is "no", but that's just a guess.
That being said, it is also unclear what advantage, if any, the 7890k brings to the table outside of the bin. You can overclock the 7870k to 7890k settings pretty easily, even in a mini-itx board, assuming that board will properly handle a 7870k or 7890k at stock.
