Okay on my Opitmus Prime rig in my Sig, i was folding on my GTX 580, for some reason while it was, when it finished a WU and the Jet Fans slowed, it Froze the Rig, Bad WU or Bad OC on that WU, i have no idea, well i was on my back up rig and heard the Fans spool down, so i was ok, next WU is coming up.....35 mins later i noticed their was no spool up of the GTX 580 fans, so i went over to check and the Rig had froze....that's not the worst part....for some reason the PC Froze with the 580 Fans at 50% and it was cool to the touch...BUT, the CPU cooler fans were sitting still, so as soon as i touched it...lets just say i think i lost a layer of skin it was so HOT. So i quickly shut her off and back on to turn the fans on, they revved to 100% and i loaded up BIOS, sure enough it was at 81C and dropping....

So i assume the CPU hit 80-95C while it was froze or higher, i didn't have a Laser Temp gun, wish i did.

I am wondering, with a OC of 4.2Ghz and a Vcore of about 1.485V, do you think my Q9550 is damaged or the life reduced? Keep in mind it was fan-less for about 35 mins.... i don't think the Prolimtech is a good passive cooler on a 4,2Ghz CPU lol

Let me know, thanks!

BUMP? I can't believe my last 2 Threads are going un-noticed when they both on HOT topics?

if i had to guess i'd say that it's life might be reduced. but if it still works and you don't let it get that hot again, it will probably be fine. if the computer continues to freeze like that, you may need to lower your overclock.

if you don't already, set the temperature and cpu fan alarms in bios. so if the cpu fans stop again and the temps skyrocket, you'll be able to shut it down before it damages itself.

Well that worries me, and it's a GPU OC i guess, even though it folds fine for days, if i shut off folding or it hits a certain WU, she freezes.

Wouldn't a BIOS Alarm be useless if the PC Froze? No mouse movement or nothing?

i have no idea why it would freeze after it finishes a WU. maybe a more experienced folder could answer that question.

i suppose a BIOS alarm might not work if the computer completely locks up. although i've never heard of a computer that would turn the cpu fan off when it locked up.

maybe it would be wise to power the cpu fan(s) via molex? this way the OS/motherboard can't randomly turn it off. granted you won't be able to software control the cpu fan anymore, but if it's a folding rig, then the cpu fan should be near 100% 24/7 right?

i might be completely off base, i'm really tired atm. hopefully this is helpful

i have no idea either and i have the CPU on Speedfan ever since ET6 started messing up. ANd i am only GPU folding, the Q9550 makes 8K PPD vs my 580 at 40K so it's not worth it. The CPU fan was on a Idle temp from the CPU, but when it froze it stopped working...i will have to figure out a back up plan for the CPU fans.

The PC froze when i used to CPU fold and just thought Folding was to hard on the OC, but she games good, so i went to GPU only folding, but i guess the GPU might be unstable, though it shouldnt be since it can fold fine for the most part...

just plug the cpu fan into the molex that way if the system does freeze, The cooling still has power.
