I am planning on turning our "to-be" HTPC into a folding farm.

We are looking at a 2.9ghz Athlon II X2 processor, Open Box MSI 890FXA-GD70, and 4 gigs of DDR3 Patriot ram.

I found a great deal on 9600 GSO's:

I was thinking of buying 4 and then dummy plugging 3 of them. I plan on 3 folding 24/7 and the fourth off and on due to watching movies.

We have some cases that will fit everything fine [lol, not exactly HTPC size...but oh well.]

I looking for input on this plan. Anything against the parts I am looking at?

Also, what power supply wattage would be recommended? I am going non-modular for money purposes. I want to keep the cost low.

I did read about somebody on here editing the bios? They underclocked the memory and gpu, but raised the shader frequency to get better performance. It was the same model 9600 and everything. How easy/safe would that be?

I didn't realize they had GTS 450's out XD

I have been searching for what is the best ppd/w graphics card for folding, but all of the mosts seem to be in the 2007-2009 range (hence why I thought those would be good folding cards).

As far as the price and ppd/w goes, the 450 blows em away. [those other cards are at 63w and approx 4k per day, 450 is 100w at 9k per day]

I could probably only afford one card. Kinda annoying, but oh well. How easy is it to overclock the shaders on the 450? [and underclock memory and such]

Should be as simple as OC'ing any other card. I have seen some 450's get higher than 9k so it would be way better than what you were previously thinking of doing.
