F3's vs Caviar black

Finally going to upgrade my harddrives for christmas.

Originally I was going to go with 2 F3's 1TB. However right now I can get 3 caviar black for the price of 2 F3's.

Would 3 WD outperform 2 F3? Is it worth the risk?

1HD failing losing all data... Not that I keep important information only on one pc..

Thanks, Can get the 3 WDs and save 20$ same time..
Well the newegg caviar's are sold out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-319-_-Product

Killer deal
They sold out right after I posted the thread.

Was looking at the recent thread of the f3's and the hdtune looks impressive.

Will using 3 HDD's put any more stress on my system?

Anyway hope they get more in stock soon, both the WD 620 and the F3 1TB are out of stock atm.
I have 3x 640 AAKS not the AALS. They are pretty much the same thing. I love mine, they have never let me down. I've never had a single problem with them. Go for them, if not get a Seagate 7200.11.
The WD blacks are quite loud compared to the F3's (IMO) but are also a bit faster.

That's about the only differences I can think of.

Sound isn't an issue. Was set on the f3's till I seen the newegg deal.

My board has a ICH9R south bridge. Will that be able to manage the 3 blacks?

Thanks for the quick replies, extremely helpful when newegg makes a sale that destroys my original plan

Probably avoid the Seagate 7200.11 series for now - You never know if all the drives with the bad firmware got recalled successfully... Confidence in Seagate got shattered with that little fiasco. Also been hearing rumors that some 7200.12 drives suffer from the same problem.

Shop around for the Blacks. The manufacturer warranty period on the WD Blacks are longer too.

If sound isn't an issue the WD's are the best choice.

I am a WD fan BTW, but I found the F3's to be superior as far as noise goes since my rig is on my desktop.

You should be fine. Are you planning on playing with any RAID configuration with the drives?

Raid 0 with 3 Blacks or Raid 0 with 2 F3's..

Hope my board will work with either combo ...

I'm hoping more come in before the deal ends.. or they extend the deal..

You should be fine. Hard-drive incompatibilities with Intel ICH is really kind of rare in any case.

3x Blacks in RAID-0 eh? I sure hope you have some kind of backup storage solution. For your sake.

I'm thinking about getting 4 drives. I have 2 WD 640 gb Blacks on order from Newegg, which I believe I can still cancel. There are also the 750 gb Blacks that are going on sale.

Should I get 4 F3s, 2 F3s/2 640s, 2 F3s/2 750s, or all 640s, or all 750s?

I'm thinking about either 0+1 or 0+5.
The Caviar Black 750GB is on an amazing sale to.
