Fallout 3: small guns the only way?

I played through the game once, playing only the main quest and just enough side missions to buy ammo. I specialized in small guns, repair, and medicine. My main weapons were the hunting rifle and combat shotgun.

I've started two more games, one character specializing in energy weapons and another in big guns. The problem with energy weapons is that they aren't any more powerful than small guns, at least with the laser guns. The only place I have seen plasma weapons is the Enclave.

Big guns are plenty powerful, but I can never find enough ammo for them. It takes about 100 rounds from the minigun to kill a mutant, then you can loot him and take the 50 rounds he was carrying. Same thing for the flamethrower. And ammo for the rocket launcher and fat boy are really expensive and rare.

So, anyone else played through the game using other weapons?

A mix of weapons is the best way to go.

Laser Rifle, in perfect condition, is a killer beast to behold. Especially if you have a good energy weapons rating.
Sledgehammer is good for unarmed enemies.

That's strange... I have like 2000+ rounds for the minigun, in fact I have so much ammo I don't even know what to do with it. I've started selling it off and I have like 5000 bottlecaps and I bought everything you can for the house. I use all the guns about equally, and explore everywhere I go. I think that is the secret to having plenty of ammo. I have like 20 missiles and 10 mini-nukes in storage as well. I'm only about halfway through the game playing on normal difficulty.

how do you guys get so much money? haha... I never pick up anything unless its ammo or weapons or something to make weapons with. I had 2000 caps but am down to 200 now, since i fixed a minigun that I found (and ended up hating since it doesnt do squat for damage) and repairing stuff that I dont have extras for.

Even random junk can be worth carrying. Just look at everything from a weight/price ratio. A carton of cigarettes weighs 2 pounds but is worth 50 caps, so it's worth hauling back to town. And alcohol is worth a pretty penny. Also, remember that ammo weighs nothing, even the mini-nukes, so pick up all kinds.

Oh, and I just found the most awesome melee weapon, the Ripper! It looks like a hedge trimmer from hell. With 15 melee skill, at 50% condition, it does 16 damage. Now if I could just mount it on my gun...

Huh, this is making me want to play through the game again as a melee character. =)
