I could be mistaken but I believe you use the product key in the box and activate Windows Live.
Launch fallout3.exe directly.
make an ISO of the game, and mount it?

Maybe you can use your CD key in Steam? I bought it from Steam, so, I wouldn't know about a hard copy. I just know you're able to input cd keys from some games and it'll load them into Steam making updates automatic, and cd's not required.
As I posted above, Fallout3 will launch without a CD if you just launch Fallout3.exe, and not the falloutlauncher.exe

You'll need the CD to use the launcher to change any of the main settings (resolution, AF, AA etc), but if you're happy with it, you can put the cd away no problem.

Might need to register for GFWL first, I don't know about that - did it when I installed.

I think the number of games you can register in steam is actually still quite limited right now, don't think it'll work with FO3

So fallout3.exe doesn't ask for a cd? That is awesome, I hate switching cds. Thanks for that knowledge. As for Steam, a retail Fallout 3 can't be registered on it, I tried.

Yeah, you have to register it with GFWL and then use Fallout3.exe.

I could send you a cracked .exe over AIM, or upload it to a site.

Or you can do the registering thing.

All you have to do is install the game. If you can run it when you put the disc in to play, you can also go find fallout3.exe and that will bypass the launcher, no disc needed.

try reinstalling it

that fixed it for me
You can register in-game. After you start the game go to the option that says LIVE and if you don't have an account you can register one through there. Fallout3.exe works fine without the cd for me, I just changed my shortcut to point to that instead of the launcher.

After I press LIVE nothing happens, I only see the background image change each 10 secs
