Fan disassembly list. (Need more suggestions!)

2458 Views 26 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  pyro_dude
Thread started out as a "What fans to paint/use" but thought it might help people more if they knew what fans they could and couldn't disassemble.

Can't:
Silverstone:
- Silverstone FN181

Very Hard:
Coolermaster:
- CoolerMaster Blademaster
- CoolerMaster Red LED High RPM

Easy:
(WARNING: Not every fan by these listed manufacturers will be guaranteed "Easy" to disassemble. Will be putting more info and model numbers in soon)
- NMB
- Papst
- Some CoolerMasters
- Deltas
- San Ace
- Yate Loons

EDIT: Need more suggestions, post fan name/model and which category it should be under! +Rep will be given to big helpers!

I cant tell you which is best, that will have to be someone else. But to paint the fan blades, just remove the clip that it is holding it in (normally under the brand sticker, and maybe a little cap) make sure you mask the inside so you get no paint in there. Also make sure you use light coats and wet sand. I did fan blades on my mods and they came out good.

Thanks! +Rep

I have done lots of painting before just never on the fans. Thanks for letting me know the procedure!

To paint a fan blade assembly:
1. peel back the motor label on the output side of fan
2. remove the plastic snap ring that holds the fan blade assembly into the fan's frame, be VERY careful while removeing it, it tends to FLY out and get lost and BE SURE to keep it someplace where it wont get lost
3. remove the fan blade assembly from the fan's frame
4. mask off the backside of the motor to not get paint onto the motor shaft/magnets
5. paint the fan blade assembly whatever colour you wish to paint it, and let it dry and cure COMPLEATELY.
6. remove the masking on the back of the fan thats covering the motor components I mentioned earlier
7. re lube fan bearings
8. reassemble fan blade assembly into the fan's frame
9. VERY VERY carefully put the plastic snap ring back onto the motor shaft as to not let it fly(it can fly out when you put it back on as well).
10. your fan is now repainted to your specs, and is ready for work.

I painted my yate loons white. as mentioned, be extremely careful when removing the c-clip, they tend to fly off easily. Use some tweezers, I bought a few (from a hardware store) including angled needle nose and they work great for removing the flan blades. here is a ocn guide if you need it and a pic of my build. good luck

I would take extra care when painting fans. Low RPM fans may not suffer from this, but If you get to much pain on one fin or what not you can throw off the balance of the fan causing all kinds of noise and premature fan failure.

Due to this, I would only do 2 REALY thin coats of paint...maby 3 if I where frisky that day.
Thanks everyone,

The tips/guides wil come in very handy! Be sure to check out my build log in about 4 weeks.

FYI, some fans are designed "impossible" to remove the blade from the shroud, examples would be CM R4/ Silvertone FN181.

Thanks for the info.

This is what i was concerned about. I know some enermax fans have removable blades. (The non-LED ones)

Yes this is true, another example are the CM blademaster sink fans, and the CM red high speed 120mm case fans. But you can still disassemble these fans, you just have to be very careful with a razor blade.

Once again thank you,

+1 to this. I my first attempt at painting a fan was turning a generic clear-blade case fan to chrome. After a few days, it started whining and then died in about 2 weeks. Its either because I didn't re-lube the bearings, or because I put too much paint on resulting in wobble. (I had applied 2 thin coats on each side)

It was a fair bit of trouble since that was my first try, and the sudden death of the fan put me off painting my 3x Gentle Typhoons white.

Anyways, good luck, keep us posted with pics if you can.

EDIT: How about the Arctic F12? They have 3-pin and PWM versions, but I'm not sure how well they'll do on a radiator.

You can still dis assemble them, BUT you have to be careful with a razor blade hand have ALOT of patience. Sometimes its worth it, especially on nice fans. Anyway, on hard to disassemble fans, Ill start the list:
CM Blademaster
CM red LED high RPM 120mm case fans.

Thanks Ill add them to the OP, might change the title of the thread to "Fans that cant be disasembled" or something along those lines.

Ill do a "Cant" list and a "Very hard to" list and will list your instructions.

I dunno if there are any that CANT be dis assembled per say, I do know theres some that are very difficult to dis assemble, like the ones I mentioned above.

Someone mention the R4's and FN181 as "designed to be impossible to disassemble" or something along those lines, but im happy to change the OP with anyone has any brilliant suggestions!

I'll be linking the fans with their offical websites soon to.

ya they may be impossible to some, but to others, such as myself who have time on their hands, and patience with a razor blade, they are just a royal pain to disassemble.
