Far Cry 2 impressions and vent

ok lets face it...Far Cry 2 was nothing like we all hoped it would be. when it comes down to it, its the game you play when you have no time for anything else and must play a game, or you simply dont have anything to play.

this is my impression of the game, which may be considered more of a venting frustration, but for those that dont have/havnt played it, heres how it goes. this is assuming you've done the tutorial missions at the start. proceed to read the below bit very fast like a british auctioneer on speed.

find car, drive down road, encounter enemy post, man MG on top of jeep gun down enemies, drive further, come across more enemies, man MG on top of jeep gun down enemies, drive further, stop to follow little green light to find diamonds, drive further, fly past enemy post, quickly stop and turn to face the enemy jeep that somehow managed 0-100 in 2.7secs to be right on your arse shooting and injuring you and your vehicle, man MG on top of jeep gun down enemies. drive further, come to ! indicating mission accept mission on other side of map roughly 20kms away. drive in new direction, encounter enemy post, man MG on top of jeep gun down enemies (oh, there will usually be more at this stop since its your lucky day, make like a pokemon collector and catch them all) drive down road further, encountering roughly 7 more jeeps with manned MGs and 5 enemy guard posts with a minimum of 3 to 4 guards each, in the space of the next 10 kms.

AND REPEAT.

oh did i mention the fire looks rather nice? and the sun, that makes some good landscape shots. oh and there really is freedom to move. freedom to breathe? what you mean in between all the seemingly spaced out yet more frequent than required repeatedly similar gun fights? sure. why not.

haha sorry to all the avid Far Cry 2 lovers out there, i mean that game isnt THAT bad. its just not THAT good. another good thing about it is that it actually is quite unique, its hard to compare to any other game at the moment. its not hard to beat though.

this venting comes from my utter frustration in thinking that maybe just for 5 minutes i could drive around, heading towards a point on the map WITHOUT having to encounter the repetitive attack cycle that is the AI's "man the jeep and charge!" technique. i would also like to know where the enemies get their cars. everytime i steal one of their 0-100 in 2.7secs jeeps, mine drives as per usual. funny that?

terrible AI. i find it amazing that my extremely stealthy infiltration to execute some dude with a briefcase and on a phone by using a silenced pistol was overheard by men on the other side of the large concrete building, let alone the other side of town?

"oh what big beautiful eyes you have" says the player to the AI. so beautiful in fact they manage to pinpoint a covered sniper shot from a mile away, zone in, and have 2 super jeeps and 6 guys on you within the space of a minute.

i dunno what the AI is on, but i think they should share.

the game the AI's not hard, it just doesnt really work.

anyways im done venting over this game. Dead Space, Uncharted on Hard difficulty and the Lego games on PS3 deserve more of my time.

Dead Space is awesome.

The cars thing did my head in too, you could drive through a checkpost and be 500m past it before they get in a car and they catch up with you in seconds :[

The checkpoints also respawn too quickly.

Another annoying point for me, I finished the story mode, sat through 15 minutes of credits expecting to be dropped back into the open world to wreak havok and finish the side-missions and collect more diamonds/weapons only to find out that you can't.....

Seems you can only play from previous loads or start a new game

Don't get me wrong, I love the game

I'm having great fun now though with a new game + trainer

woh, dude, THANK YOU for filling me in on the non-replayability factor. looks like im gonna have to discover everything first. seems kinda stupid they'd do that, but then im guessing from the story so far (i havnt played much of the actual main game line so please dont spoil) theres no need for you to be in africa once its done.

That right there is making me sell my game before even playing it that much. I never found the game fun.

Who makes a open world game and doesn't allow free roam after you beat it. Horrid horrid idea.

(Fallout 3 does the same from what I heard =/)

haha, that was a good explanation of what the game was like. I really got tired of driving around all the time, getting out of your jeep every 30 sec was pretty annoying. I must say I liked Act II much better, its much easier to move around, the bus positions are better located.
i get kicked to desktop in win x64 if i turn the settings too high. is it s 64 bit problem, a not having dx10 problem, or a torrented copy problem?

anyone? anyone? /ben stien

Fallout 3 has great replay value.

i agree with the first post pretty much. But I am enjoying it. Its just the freedom factor for me and the lack of scripted levels that need loading each time etc. I like approaching each base differently each time. AKA snipe or fire or stealth etc. But you are right, in the end there are THAT many enemy bases that you just rush it by driving into them and mounting the MG on your jeep each time.

I dont know about you either but the story line is REALLY hard to get passionate about. They keep throwing all these random african names at you about people who you're supposed to kill or who are leaders etc etc and caused me to be ambushed and ditched in the dessert etc etc but at the end of the day I just dont know who the characters are enough before they're dead so the storyline lacks structure in that way. All I know is that everyones got guns because of the jackal (who is probably the coolest guy in the game we should be able to play HIM). Then theres the UFLL and the APR who are fighting it out and both of them want to kill you but sure their leaders will employ you to do their dirty work and seemingly that doesnt matter because they are your enemies still. I thought you could choose who you work for? but it turns out you can only do missions for each faction if the little *mission* logo appears above their mark on the map. So the game chooses when you get to work for both.

To be honest, the whole *can't see or hear your own character* thing doesnt work in this game like it does in for example half life 2. Your character isnt interesting enough to have a silent personality and I want to be able to speak and see myself in the mirror etc but I cant.

One thing I also noticed is that the AI is super dumb but way faster and more accurate than you are on the move. It doesnt matter if you sneak up and knife one of the guys silently. All of a sudden the rest know EXACTLY where you are and you're f**ked. It abolishes all means of stealth gameplay and means that every time you're forced to go at it with a machine gun through the grass and fire. Which, admitedly is what the game promised to be about all along. But it would be nice to have variety in combat.

I do like the game. The combat and free roam is a nice way to pass time. But in my eyes its not a far cry game, and it wouldve been if crytek made it, but then again they probably wouldnt have made it DIFFERENT enough to the first game. But atleast they'd follow the super-mutant-volcano-experiment theme of the first game. that was awesome.

Chris Livingston, writer of Concerned, wrote a very good observation: The annoyance level of the guard posts entirely depends on your mindset. If you rethink the game from a new viewpoint; it's just a linear shooter, with the line going all over the place, then you can play it much differently. The goal isn't to race to each objective, but instead just take your time and obliterate each outpost individually. In a normal FPS, you don't exactly race past every enemy saying "God, do I have to deal with these Combine AGAIN???"

The respawning is definitely annoying though. And I would have to agree that this game is pretty disappointing. And WHY ARE DEVELOPERS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING WIDESCREEN AS THE NORM???
I played Farcry 2 for about 9 hours altogether.
I gave it enough time to make an impression and to
see what it had to offer and i can summarize it in one sentence:

Get mission, drive forever at 10000 mph, stopping to mount gun
and kill face; kill man, get rough diamonds. Repeat.

I was more impressed with spore and i didn't exactly even like that game.
much as i loved Far Cry 2, i feel the same way - it's just too repetitive and too ridiculous. i mean, come on - the AI is way too aggressive and it just gets annoying after the first couple of hundred checkpoints. why does EVERYONE have to shoot at you, and take forever to die?

and what difference does freedom make if the game decides, as someone else says, which missions happen when? i am starting to think that a replay will simply mean i have to kill character B first instead of character A like i did before...

I'll stay away froom Ubisoft games -AC was the same way...

trying to get into Fallout 3, and i will be grabbing The Witcher and Mass Effect soon...
I think I would agree with all the statement so far, but I still have fun with it. I can't even think of any concrete reason of why I go back and keep playing, it just seems to be an overall experience that many games don't have. There's a level of immersion and personality that comes from the total freedom.

I basically play in 3 game modes:

1) Sneak - Silenced weapons, dart rifle, night attacks. I can take out a whole village and not get noticed.

2) Assault - Grenade launcher, AK-47, M249. I lob a few boomers and mow down the people with automatics as they run from their flaming/exploding outposts.

3) Explore - I go around trying to find cool landscapes or a new type of animal and also look for diamond cases.

It seems they've adopted the "Jack of all trades, master of none" mentality. If you try and mix it up a bit, the game may become a bit more fun. That being said, a good game shouldn't need effort to make it fun.
with all my gripes, I do have to admit, I did find myself playing non-stop for the most part. I havent found too many games that I can do that with.
No, you dont have to do that.

Or you could pull out your big ass gun and start a fire and just kill a camp or something. Or pour gasoline on a town and light it up. Yo, its not about how to win the game its about having fun with it.
I agree with the overall OP.

And like others have mention, I also find myself playing it non-stop for some reason.
the game is the best fps i have ever played. but not the best multiplayer fps, that goes to cod4 and css

sorry if i sound condescending, but how old are you then? or better yet, how many FPS games have you actually played?

to each their own of course, everyone has their opinion, but the best you've ever played? you must not have played many FPS games lol...or any good ones.

not trying to sound rude. but thats a big call to make.

especially when Crysis, a year older than Far Cry 2, does a lot of the things Far Cry 2 tries to pull off better
People said Crysis was over-hyped, and I disagreed. However, Far Cry 2 most certainly doesn't deserve as much attention as it got. I won't be buying another Far Cry game now that CryTek don't make them. To be honest I really should have known better in the first place as the console versions of Far Cry were crap. There's a chance you may find my copy for sale in the near future.

It all boils down to the fact that I'm geting sick of the same old crap that this game consists of. Sure the environment is huge, but it's the little things that completely ruin the game. The biggest turn off for me is that you can only have one mission active at a time. In my opinion they should have made it like Oblvion where you could accept multiple missions and then go about the map completing them before returning o the main town for your rewards. In Far Cry 2 it always becomes a case of accept mission, travel all the way to the other side of the map for a mission, stopping numerous times at the same checkpoints. Once the mission is accomplished you then return to the main town, again stopping each time at checkpoints. It's that bad that more often than not I'll always try to travel by boat along the rivers as there are less checkpoints that way.

In short I find this game to be mediocre and boring, Dead Space may not have much replay value either, but it's a darn site more entertaining.
