Fedora 10 on Acer Aspire One

1352 Views 22 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  chemicalfan
Hi, I installed Fedora 10 on my Acer Aspire One, but am having difficulties installing the madwifi driver for it. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I am a noob at this, and this is my first Fedora install.

Also, I wouldn't mind changing my file system to ReiserFS.

Thanks in advance,

RieserFS is dieing, I would use ext3 or xfs.

Have you tried just doing

Code:
Code:
sudo yum install madwifi

Specifically you want to install the "akmod-madwifi" package. That will pull in everything you need. Then just restart your computer and the wireless card should come right up.

Yes, I have... it used to show the different connections, and would let me connect (but would never actually connect, just hang for a while), and now I cannot even view and wireless connections.

Also, is it possible to move into Ext4?

i wouldn't do so uintil the distro you're using officially supports it, to avoid potential issues

Doing now, kinda slow on Acer Aspire One.

Installed, but will not let me see the wireless networks... (click on the icon in tray, and no wireless networks showing).

But... It is a simple driver, shouldnt cause too much of an issue.

he was talking about Ext4

In my Aspire One, before I swapped the wireless out for an Intel card, I just built the driver from scratch and it worked out well for me. Download the latest driver from madwifi, decompress it, then at terminal run:

make
su
make install
modprobe ath_pci

Then edit your modules file and add a line for ath_pci to start it at boot.

Please explain in detail what you mean (I am a linux noob, just decided to install fedora last night).

Don't worry about it. This is pretty much what the akmod stuff does in Fedora.

Are you sure you're within range of any wireless networks?

I have like 20 networks in range in my room. Also, my wifi from my router can reach me from the basement from the top floor, so range is not an issue)

Did you actually install akmod-madwifi from RPM Fusion, or did you install something else?

rt2870? That isn't madwifi. Did you change the wireless card, or did Acer? What exactly DO you have in the computer? Run lspci -v and paste it.

Um.... I don't know if I'm reading this right, but it looks like you have too many modules loaded for your WiFi device. I don't know what all you've installed, but it looks like Fedora is loading both ath_pci and ath5k for your card, when it should only be one.

error10: should he blacklist one of the drivers?

Bingo. ath5k is the newer (and less stable) driver and I think it's the one that should be blacklisted, unless you have a very new 802.11n draft card which isn't covered by (the older and more stable) ath_pci.

Or, if ath_pci isn't working, then blacklist it and try ath5k.

I blacklist listed ath5k in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

I have the list back for wireless, but it won't connect to my network, keeps asking for password (doesn't say it is wrong, just hangs, and won't connect)

Hey, I just uninstalled Fedora and stuck Linux Mint (KDE) on my laptop. So much easier to set up (.deb is a lot easier then .rpm, just is)
