Finally going to be installing Windows 7 today

Newegg shows my hard drive as delivered to our mailing box and I'm going to head down there in a few minutes to pick it up. But I wanted to know all the quick tips on enabling/disabling certain settings and things that I know have become a nightmare for some people.

UAC is the first thing that comes to mind. Also not having to worry about "running in administrator" is something I'm come across while downloading all the correct drivers and software.

I've recently heard about that Windows 7 tweaker program, which I'll probably download as my version of TuneUp Utilities is outdated and I don't think it will work with 7.

Any other basics you guys can mention to make this install as smooth as possible? Thanks.

I run 7 without any tweaks on my laptop, you shouldn't have any issues
Well I'm not worried about having any issues per say, I just know there are some settings that are extremely inconvenient and unnecessary that I just want to be able to disable or change from the get go.
Install Windows 7
install drivers (windows 7 will install everything automatically BUT i suggest use personal drivers for stuff like video cards and web cams and card readers)
update windows 7
install antivirus browsers office 2007
run experience index

set desktop theme to your liking

Enjoy

ive done windows 7 for 4 computers and thats my steps for installing windows.

What lokster said. UAC isn't as annoying in 7 as it was in Vista. Also, run-in-administrator isn't a huge deal either. 95% of the time, the driver or program will automatically run as administrator if it needs to unless it's an old program, and that's no biggie. right click on the .exe, go to compatibility and check the checkbox that says "run as administrator" and click okay. From then on, it will run as administrator.

Tweak it yourself = win!

I have 50 seconds boot time to fully loaded, antivirus, wireless net and everything!
Its just that it is hard to believe that Win 7 doesn't need tweaks. A entire industry was developed to "deal with" Vista (which I have no trouble with) so people are easy to conclude Win 7 has "extremely inconvenient" aspects too it.

I agree, relax enjoy Win 7.

Yea, it's not as much of a PITA as it was on Vista.
I still disable it along with Windows Defender, but that is just a preference of mine.

You shouldn't have any major problems.

Anyway, enjoy it OPl!!!
Once you get settled / used to any changes your going to love it

Dude, you have to tweak it.

Why wouldn't you?

That's what computers are all about.

Don't leave it stock.

My process goes like this;
Install OS
Run updates
Install all my "must-have" programs.
Run CCleaner, Defrag (my Defrag), create an image.

I do disable a handful of services, change a few settings, etc.

You need to just get in there and tweak it.

Well guys the initial install was a complete pain in my ****ing ass. I've never had luck with a working CD-ROM and that gave me a headache for hours as it struggled to install Windows 7 and I "patiently" waited for it to move on ahead.

But after it finally finished I began installing all of the drivers for my mobo, sound card, video, codecs, importing browser settings with a special add-on with Firefox called FEBE and got most of my important data transferred over from my other SATA drive.

Windows 7 flat out owns. It must seriously be 5 times faster than Windows XP is, minus all the stupid hiccups and errors it would get just from being old. I haven't come around to installing many of my older games yet, just Fallout 3. And ALL of the lag problems, studdering and what have you I had trouble with on XP are completely gone. The game runs absolutely flawless now.

Thank god Microsoft did something right. I feel like my computer is actually complete for the first time in a long time. I have no plans upgrading for years to come except for possibly a minor video card upgrade if the price is right.

With one rig I use Quark 7 and it is not compatible with a 64 bit OS (for now) so I had to sick with XP on one (all my Win 7's are 64). With Win 7 it is nice to not get stuck in that UAC loop that is so much fun with vista (or at least it has not popped up its ugly head yet)

This.
I was able to disable like 15 services I do not use and it sped up boot times and make my netbook a little less memory hungry.
