Saw this , was wondering if I could use it to unlock my Windows 8.1 computer (as a substitute to a password)?

Nope, that looks like it only scans fingerprints. You need one that will be used for security, something like this:

Just looks like it scans prints. You probably want to buy the first one I posted it supports Windows 8. The 2nd one I posted doesn't have software so avoid that one. And the one you posted are only readers and has no support for security. They may not work with Windows 8 because the manufacturer must update the drivers/software. It's probably a safer bet to get the Windows 8 supported one.
