Good afternoon folks!

I finally finished my first build two days ago and I am quite pleased with myself. It was an intimidating process at first but I managed to do everything by just reading and looking up guides on the interwebs. With that said, it's pretty obvious that I am quite new to the true intricacies of computing, but with some luck in a job I landed I have the monetary means to finally explore what I've been wanting to for quite some time. I'm so grateful everything booted up perfectly first power up.

I just bought the new Acer 24'' monitor right now as well and just finished setting it up.

Here is my build...
  • Mobo: ASUS EVO M4A87TD
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
  • CPU Heatsink/Fan: ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball
  • GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB
  • Power Supply: CORSAIR 650W ATX12V
  • RAM: 4GB G.Skill Ripjaw Series DDR3
  • Case: Cooler Master HAF 922

I have been reading the stickies and guides on here learning how to overclock my gpu and so far this is my setting:
Core: 846 / Shader: 1692 / Memory: 1807

Anyone have a similar setup and could maybe chime in with some opinions or useful info?

Ramp up the voltage and try to hit 900 Mhz, the cards run pretty cool and will hit the voltage ceiling before you hit the thermal ceiling (at least that was my experience).

How much voltage would you suggest? I'm a bit timid on adjusting the voltage since I am a novice. I need to read much more haha.

Without a modded bios the slider only goes so far (I think it should be 1.1xxV), I would say unless you are under water you won't want to go beyond this maximum. The more important metric is your load temps.

If you air cooling, you will be nice and safe with a modded BIOS (which is pretty easy to do) and stay at 1.1v w/ 900 core and 2100+ shader

otherwise ramp it up to maximum 1.087v and try to get 850+ core and then 2100 + shaders.

Use Kombustor to stable test it for 20-30min, and MSI afterburner will let you increase voltage if you unlock it in settings.

Max Voltage is 1.2v but you should not ever go that high unless water cooled. Even 1.15v is pushing it on air.

Thank you for the very useful info. Could you possibly direct me to what I can do specifically to my BIOS?
