right click the top bar and click customise.
add a new flexible space and put it near the search bar. now you can move the search bar around and stretch it so it is bigger.
hope i beat deadlock to it...

EDIT: you could also download this extension

or anyone of these which seem to have their own search bar which you can customise...

also, what i found useful was if you right click on the bar and uncheck the bookmarks toolbar. it'll free up some space and leave more room for the page you're viewing.

hmmm when i tried it mine automatically stretched all the way along that bar. like i said before try and download a specialised search extension, that should let you use it as a whole toolbar and probably add some more good features.
btw what search engine is that you are using on your search bar??

ok i have figured out how to do this. it involves editing the userchrome.css file. for more informations on finding this file see the link for the firefox throbber in my sig. add these lines to the bottom of the file.

the 400 specifies how many pixes the search bar is. if you want i will write a detailed guide on this.

Code:
Code:
 /* Make the Search box flex wider
   (in this case 400 pixels wide) */
 #search-container, #searchbar {
   -moz-box-flex: 400 !important;
}
