Hi I was building a new rig for a frend just now,

Heres the spec

AM3 PhII 955
Gigabye 790XT-UD5P
Corsair 4gb ddr3 1600 C8
Silverstone 750w

I made a dumb mistake by destroying the white plastic on the cpu socket and now its half-cracked (that'd teach me to read the manual 1st nxt time) The cpu now sit on the half broken socket and when i try to turn on the computer, i did not any response at all, the motherboard does not show any sign of standing by and i cant turn the whole machine on

I have tried removing the cpu and it still doesnt do anyything, could this be the motherboard is dead or the cpu, or even the PSU?

Cheers

If there is nothing like lights, fans turning on it's most likely the PSU.

But first, did you switch on the PSU or plug it in?

Are you referring to the actual socket the CPU is installed in?
If that is fractured, you may not get all the pins on the CPU to properly make contact

It's not going to do anything if you don't have the CPU in there. I think you're socket being cracked is your issue. What did you do exactly to crack it?

I'm a intel person, and usually there is a a plastic sits on top of the socket which comes with a label to tell you to take it off in order to place the cpu. As I did not read the manual i assume that was the case and had difficulty in taking it off, and started peeling it off and then the plastic came out pieces by pieces. So i managed to peeled half of the plastic after i realized it wasnt a smart thing to do, therefore the cpu now sits on the socket with half of the white plastic.

I tried the PSU with another board, it turned on just fine. As for this mobo, when i push the power cable from the PSU to motherboard it turns on and off very quickly, the led from the fans, motherboard flickers. So all these symptoms are because I cracked the cpu socket?

Whats this white plastic your talking about? You mean the white socket? Thats where the cpu goes and I dont recall ever removing a plastic substance your referring to. Does the cpu still fit firmly in the socket? You may have damaged it and probably you need to submit an rma. Tell your friend it came defective, or hes never going to trust you again.

Yes.... since that is the CPU socket itself, the board is hosed....

I thought fans would still spin even without a cpu.

Oh well...
Board is junk. I doubt GB would RMA it.
If you really peeled the top part of an am2 socket off, the board is trash, I don't see any way to fix that damage. You might contact Gigabyte and see if for a fee they would fix the board for you. Sorry you had this problem, I am sure we have all done rookie things.

I would love to see a pic of the socket if you have the time.
i had kind of the same issue when i was building my new build just a couple of months ago ! i didnt damage anything but nothing would come on my screen, the board showed power but nothing on screen , this was due to my ram ! if you have tried on another MB then all is fine with power supply i done exact same test. TBH sounds like the MB is faulty or just dead ! if there are lights on the MB and they dont come on when you turn on the power then MB id dead or damaged, if they do then mabey mabey its your ram !
hope this helps bud !
the mobo is borked i think, contact the manufacturer.
Can you upload some photos of what you did exactly..?
Yeah, there's no way that Gigabyte are going to RMA that (they're reluctant enough to RMA on legitimate requests, so there's no way this would work) since you pretty much did it by your own neglect of reading the manual.

The manual is your friend

As you see that sense is not so common.
