First build! $1700 budget

980 Views 20 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Coldharbour
I am going to be building my first computer and I have a $1700 budget. I would like to go i7. I am going to use it for gaming (MW2), internet, poker, music + movies. I want a real good GPU, and real fast RAM. I live in Canada so please keep that in mind when suggesting links (newegg.ca). I already have Windows 7, keyboard, and mouse. I do have a monitor now, but really would like to get a new one if possible with the budget to get the most out of my GPU. Please help me build my first computer! Thanks all!

Hi and welcome to OCN! You have quite a budget, and I expect you want a really sweet fast gaming machine. Here is my suggestion:

MOBO: $235 Foxconn Bloodrage

CPU: $309.99 i7 920 2.66 GHz

RAM: $271.99 6 GB Corsair Dominator (3x2GB)

GPU: $359.99 XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB Black Edition

PSU: $159.99 Corsair 750HX Modular

HDD: $225-$250 Intel 80GB G2 X-25M SSD

Optical Drive: $130 LG Blu-Ray Drive + DVD/CD Burner

Case: $109.99 Antec 900

Total: $1801-$1826 depending on where you buy the SSD. Just a tad over budget

I dont need a storage HHD i already have a WD 500GB
Well, here goes my quick rough draft...

Antec 300 Case - $55
Intel i7-920 - $290
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 - $75
ASRock X58 Extreme - $170
OCZ Gold 1600 6Gb - $150
CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX - $170 (may need more power, double check this)
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB - $110
DVD Burner - $45ish for one of your choice
2x Radeon 5850's - $620

For a total cost of around $1685 (just under your budget) and it should be available in Canada too... but I honestly forgot to check.

I'm sure others will pick this apart (I would expect nothing less), but hopefully it's a place to start.

If you don't need a storage drive, we could try to work in an SSD, but personally, I think they aren't quite suitable for your budget. You would see much more of an improvement from the graphics cards than you would from an SSD in games.

So, if you would like another hard drive, the WD would do fine (it's a very fast drive). If you don't, I'd quickly recommend a higher quality motherboard.

(I should also mention that the 5850 cards went up in price substantially. Depending on when you buy, you might be able to save money or bump these up to even more powerful cards. At this moment, you could get an nVidia 295 for as cheap as $510. So the extra few frames might not be worth the extra $100.

Looks good, but i'd swap the bloodrage for a flaming blade, and the 900 for a CM 690.

I haven't read much on the Flaming Blade, is the $40 savings worth the features/quality/performance difference from the Bloodrage?

Kheops PMd me and said that he does want the SSD. He wants his computer to run as fast as possible. Anyone else got a mock build Kheops? Maybe one with a monitor? Build can go to about ~1900 if we can fit a nice 24" monitor in there.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I really like jcichetti's build. Isn't that all top of the line stuff? Is there any other build suggestions out there guys this is my first time and I want the absolute quickest gaming/media machine that will last me the next 5+ years. I don't need a monitor just yet I will keep the one I have now. Budget can stay at 1700. Thanks for the help everyone!

Why? The bloodrage is better and has more features.

I'd pay the extra $$ and get the blood rage GTI. The flaming blade is VERY cut down and has alot of poor short cuts.

FYI you can get a i7 920 for 199.99 at Microcenter in-store..

As for RAM, Mushkin 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 6-7-6-18 Redline
http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Redline/998692.aspx. It doesn't have to be this exact set but anything Mushkin and you'll be making the right decision. http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Performance-Memory.aspx.

I'd suggest SSD but prices are just to high right now. I'd hold off and wait for prices to come back down. When you are ready if you're looking for a single boot drive it's hard to beat the Intel 80GB. However I do expect good things from the OCZ Colossus series. If you're looking to RAID some SSD then OCZ Vertex all the way, hands down.. Just make sure you flash the GC firmware
.
