Hello OCN, I need help.

Just yesterday I installed my first Intel CPU in 10 years...my last one was a pentium 3

I got the 3570k and an MSI G45 Z77, Ram are Crucial Ballistix 1600 8GB, cooler is the Zalman Performa

the thing is, Im lost, with this new kind of BIOS, the UEFI and the Intel settings...I just dont know how to overclock

I want to reach a modest Overclock, I live in El Salvador so my normal ambient temp are 30c...so Im aiming for 4.2Ghz

How can I reach 4.2 ??

this is a screen of the CPU, stock voltage is 0.960

idle temp between 32-40

thanks

good upgrade for a 4.2ghz overclock it should be fairly easy, just get into the bios change the ai overclocker tuner to manual or select xmp if your memory supports that. than change multiplier to 42, save and reset. most mobos will overclock to 42 easy with everything on auto. you screen shot is at idle and at idle the freq and voltage drop to save power when under full load the freq and voltage will increase. you have cpuz so just monitor temps with real temp and test with prime95

do not change the bclk or fsb at all only multiplier with these new chips and don't overclock via software you wanna stay under 1.35v and 80c while stress testing.

ok I got this:

Some questions:

voltage is too high for 4.2 ??

multiplier is 42.....is that ok ??

the core speed is ALWAYS at 4.2.......my old Phenom II x4 underclocks to 800MHz when idle...and when load it returns to 3.2Ghz...does this Intel do that or not ??

Im just lost..

in OC genie mode....I can reach 4.4 and 1.25vcore...but all the power options are disabled...I just cant enable them...CPU is always running at max frecuency

and in the standar OC mode...i CANT change the voltage or the multplier...it just show me the "auto" option..

:/

Im in normal power mode, even in the "power saver" setting of windows the CPU runs at 4.2

OC genie II (in bios) is the only way I can OC the CPU

in the standard mode this is all I get:

just an auto setting for multiplier and the voltage

Im doing something wrong ??

Have you tried clearing the CMOS and trying again? Maybe it got stuck in some kind of Auto overclock mode.

I will try that..its strange to be honest...I updated the BIOS, and now I can change the voltage and multiplier in the standar version

I dont need the OC Genie tab anymore....but the frecuency is still stuck at max, I have tried everything in the BIOS, every power manage setting and nothing

its like when putting a 44 or 42 (for example) multiplier in the CPU ratio...the multiplier get stuck or something

there is a MSI rep here in the forum ?? I have the cpu at stock setting BTW...with turbo it reach 3.8......I dont think the difference between 3.8 and 4.2 will be huge....but damn I want to OC this thing

Does your BIOS have both a CPU Ratio and Turbo Ratios? If so, change the Turbo Ratios instead of the CPU Ratio - CPU Ratio may be forcing the same ratio all the time. Also manually enable both EIST and C1E (Auto is sometimes silently set to disabled when overclocking) and be sure your Windows Power Plan is set to Balanced (I think you said it already is).
