Hey all,

Im looking into getting a laptop for grade 12 and UV next year, ive been looking around and decided an Acer Travelmate would be a good idea, the specs are posted below. What im wondering is, does anyone have any experiance with Acer laptops. Im wondering about the qualitly, cooling issues (i dont want to cook my balls off), Lag problems (after the system has been running for some time) and anything elese that might be important to the brand. Thx

choose primarly based on gpu, Memory and C2D 1.8Ghz chip. It can also use a docking station (wich is great cuz i hate laptop keyboards and touch pads, it also makes screen size not important).

I'd advice you not to keep your laptop on your lap, it reduces sperm count lol.

It looks to be a nice laptop you have there, whats the battery life like?

That graphics card is fine if you just want to browse the web, check emails, do projects, and tasks like this. However, if you want to game (even casually) I would recommend upgrading. I would spend up to $100 more on a Graphics Card if I was you.

Everything else looks great though, Core 2 Duo + 2GB of Ram and a good laptop hard drive (most are 60 or 80GB).

I'm gonna have to say you probably won't use 2gb of ram on a laptop.....but whatever floats your boat.
You might if it was a Macbook..but it's not...lol.

lol yes prehaps not on the lap :S

battery life is up to 5h stock, but the CD-rom can be removed for a second battry pack that would give u up to 7.5 hours to life. What graphics card you guys recomend, i kinda like the 2300 as it can do DX10, wich may be handy down the road. There was also a laptop with a 7900 nivida card or an
x1600 ATI card

I'd get one with a 7900 mobile version personally, and 1gb ram. I like how you can get an extra battery by removing the cd; like some dell laptops do. I'd personally put linux on it right away (dual boot), and the 7900 is a nice card; with decent drivers for linux. 1gb ram should be sufficient for all windows or linux needs.

Ok out of all these GPU wich one would be the best. 7950 GTX with 512MB DDR3 OR GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB DDR2 OR Quadro FX 2500M with 512MB DDR3 SDRAM OR X2300HD 128mb? This is for gaming and posibly 3D rendering.

however you will not be able to play DX10 games

The 8600gt is a good compromise

For rendering thats what the quatro is for.

Note gaming and rendering cards should not be used vice versa.

More gaming or rendering?

I say get 8600 so you can play DX10 games.

but 7950GTX is you have no intention of playing DX10 games (which you will)

So 8600gt FTW

8600GT is decent, but it's no gaming monster.

Soon? No. Large chunks of games will be DX9 for a pretty long while.

Plus the 8600GT is no monster in DX10.

If he plans on keeping his lappy for 2+ years, then the 8600GT or battery life is of concern, then yes, a 8600GT. Otherwise, no.

I'd go for the 7950GTX. It's a real gaming monster, and DX 10 games will have a DX9 mode for a long time.

I thought it was GT only as well, but he said there was....

Plus, either way, they both are great cards, even the GTX doesn't exist.
