First *real* computer build

602 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ln2ftl
I am building a new system when i get out of Afghanistan. I rather not spend more than 5k. I wanted a computer that will last awhile and be upgradable. I built another computer previously that turned to be useless. I have designed a system that I would like advice on too make better.

I wanted a computer that looks stealthy/secretive with a twist of futuristic into it along with color coordinated colors between components/mouse/keyboard etc. I plan on overclocking everything eventually not untill I read further into it and feel confident I won't melt the system like I melted my cars ECU. Liquid cooling will also be done later as I understand, the EVGA 4-way chipset waterblock isn't released yet.

If any of you could give me advice and tips it would be appreciated as I am new to this, Thank you in advance.

Case: SILVERSTONE RAVEN
Motherboard: EVGA LGA 1366 Intel X58 4-WAY SLI Classified
Graphics Card: 2x EVGA CO-OP Edition GeForce GTX 295 1792MB
CPU: Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition Bloomfield 3.33GHz LGA 1366
Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600
Power Supply: SILVERSTONE 1500W 12V
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series
Network Card: EVGA Killer Xeno
OS:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full

CD/DVD/Blu-Ray: Don't Know, I hate most how they have a huge logo on it, I just want something black.

you will need triple channel DDR3 and also if you are going extreme (so it seems) buy ATI since they have the best cards on the market ATM. 5970 is the fastest gpu currently available.
Change the 975 to a 920 and spend that money on a couple SSDs. Change the 295s to 58xx. You probably wont need a 1200w PSU the Corsair 1000HX should be more then enough. Is there really a reason for getting the Network Card? Also maybe look into a ASUS sound card.
oops sorry forgot to mention the reason why I didn't put down the 5970, and the gtx 295. The 300 series is supposed to be release about the time I get back so I will actually be getting the gtx 300 series.
That sucks!

Case: Get whatever you want! but I recommed you a Lian Li P80
Motherboard: EVGA LGA 1366 Intel X58 4-WAY SLI Classified *perfect*
Graphics Card: 3x 285 ftw or 4x 5870 or a 5970!
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 pawns the 975 on air

Memory: Get at lease a Corsair Dominator or a nice G.skill :S
Power Supply: Go for a HX1000 much better then a 1500w Silverstone!
Hard Drive: Spinpoint F3 1gb's in raid 5
and intel x25 80gb's in raid 0!
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series
Network Card: EPIC FAIL NO NEED?
OS:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Full

Something like that.. *Get a i7 920* 100%...

no, dont do that! Get dual 5870's if you want a dual card setup, forget the 5970.

never set anything in stone. long awaited hardware is around the corner (I9, Fermi). Many of us here would assume the same thing as to what you are doing in Afghanistan, and believe you deserve the best. The Raven is fricken awesome from what ive seen and an evga classified board is the most dependable and overclockable. Once NVidia gets their fabrication issues straight and Intel lets the I9 6-core loose already, you will most likely have the best build out there...for that particular month. keep saving though
doesn't the 4 way SLI not fit in any case, its XL ATX.

proof I'm not a troll http://s634.photobucket.com/albums/uu67/seta8967/ if you need further proof just ask me.

the 4way does fit in the Raven, why I chose it over the HAF 93. XiDillon I suppose you are right I should wait to get back before asking for advice.. Though for not knowing about computers I did pretty good i suppose

This.

The 920 in the end performs very simularly to the 975 when both are OC'd anyways. SSDs, however, bring your whole computer to life. Everything loads as fast as lighting.
