How would i go about getting the most PPD out of my new Phenom II 720? Should i have thre clients for each core? I'm not sure how.... or even where to begin but with a little help i want to put this cpu to the cause.

Welcome to the fold.

Here is a good guide to get setup.

For the best ppd, folding in vmware running some sort of linux would be the best way. There are several guides, including notfreds, bal3wolf, and error10. You can fold on all three cores using vmware player 3.
i've used vmware and i wasn't to fond of it. i'd like to use the standard [email protected] client but i want to know how to set it up for a tri core.
You won't need to do anything differently than with a 4 core system. The Windows client runs with 4 threads, 1 per core, by default so you'd be fine with one instance. You could try two instances and see what the ppd is but I doubt it would be much of a boost and may even be worse that just one instance.

So i download that, install and let it go?
Does the SMP use 2 cores or 4 max? If 4, one SMP client will be enough for a tri-core.

If 2, one SMP client and one standard tray client should do the trick.

That's the unicore client. Here's the SMP. Makesure to dl and replace the .exe with the Drop-in binary (on the same page)

You'll need the SMP client which is located on this page. I would suggest the MPICH one over the Deino one.

EDIT: And your probably gonna need to get the drop in executable which is located right below that. Make sure you follow this "NOTE: Please use the v6.23 installer package to setup the SMP client. Then download the v6.24 "drop-in" binary below to replace the expired v6.23 client executable. A new installer package with v6.24 will follow shortly."

i install the SMP and then the windows link right below it i replace the .exe with?

Setting applications to certain cores of your CPU. You can do it in Task Manager.

says i get error with core downloads or something

Can you post a screen shot of the error?
smp isn't maxing any of my cores out. fahcore is only using 1/3 of each core. ... am i doing something wrong?
Which work unit are you working on? And make sure that it's using the A1 core not GROMACS or something like Core 78.

Yeah that's the wrong core. You need to stop the client, go to the folder where [email protected] is installed and delete the queue.dat file and work folder then restart the client. If you have the -smp flag set correctly you should get an A1 work unit.
what's smp flag?
You need the -smp flag in the client config or shortcut other wise you'll be getting uniprocessor work units meant for single core systems. With the -smp flag youll be getting multi-core work units which are meant for cpus with more than one core. Here's a guide on how to set the -smp flag thought its a little old.
