Folding is an accident waiting to happen

[email protected], sure it's nice, your helping people from your house with your ubber computer. But is it really that safe?

Call this crazy I think not, this idea seems very plausible.

Remember in 2001 ( I was still in school back then) the 15 year old kid "Mafia Boy" that used a dos attack to cripple all sorts of big websites like yahoo and CNN. He got a virus off some Russian hacker in his hacking clan or whatever. He than used the virus on all the "zombie" computers he already had in control and used all those computer to DOS attack big sites.

DOS attacks are EXTREMELY simple to do, the problem is to get the bandwidth and computers to do it, and I think [email protected] is exactly what a hacker would need.

What if somebody were to infect the master client for the folding software updates and stuff like that, im sure it could be found on Stanford servers somewhere. Then the virus would spread like wildfire to the thousands of users in this massive shared computing effort. The hacker could then use all of our rigs (folders leave em on like 24/7) to do a MASSIVE dos attack bigger than any Mafia Boy crap.

Still think it's a crazy idea?

im sure it would have already happened, or would be obvious as to how to fix
Take your conspiracy theories right on out of here. Don't try to take something good and flip it around like that.

On a positive note, have you thought about a career with fox news?

Nobody would need that much bandwidth. Folding has millions of computers attached to it, and if every computer had just a single 128kbit upload line (which is usually higher, but taking into the calculation that some people have multiple computers, it's pretty much evened out). Unless you plan to DDOS some country's internet exchange, there's no point in doing it.

Not to mention it'd be incredibly easy to track if the crooks controlling Stanford just has some sort of fat between their ears.
^ LoL.

I'm sure its possible. There isn't much that isn't. It just.. isn't very likely.

Don't get me wrong here, im not trying to scare you all away from folding. I just thought of a not-so crazy scenario. The fact that it would be REALLY easy to do for a mid-range hacker is what im trying to point out. Sure I could say something like, "Is your money really safe?" "The US Army could break into your local bank" but time has shown that little 15 year old kids can inflict billions of dollars in damage with little actual programing knowledge.

OMG... the Internet is an accident waiting to happen!
I think that all our "ubber" computers are safe, and when and why would the whole army rob a bank?!
And even if your intentions were good, you are still saying something that could potentially scare off a new folder. There was no need for your OP.

No. It WOULDNT be easy for a mid range hacker. You think you are the first one to come up with this idea? You arent. I think you need to get a better understanding of things before you go throwing stuff like this around the boards. Saying that it would be easy to pull off is just a joke to say the very least.

I would love to see it tried though. Alot of people would find themselves in a mess of well deserved trouble.
