Folding Rig

Right guys... Im looking at setting up a dedicated folding rig in the next few months hopefully, im new to folding but understand the basic's of it

However, im looking at "Epic Rig" status for just a single machine and then my gaming rig overnight. So im browsing round to find the best machine possible that has the highest PPD for cost.

One question is, CPU or GPU based... Folding uses both right? So would a Q6600 + 4 x GT8800's be one of the most awesome rigs possible?

let me know
ta

That would be a good rig, but IMO 4 X 8800GTS 512 would be even better, for about the same price.

This, but you'll need a motherboard that has space for 4 dual slot PCI-e cards.
Even better, GTS 250's.

Get a bit more into folding before you buy, just so you know what you'll have to be setting up.

Defiantly will be buddy, Gonna be paying alot more attention. I just though rigging this kind of rig up and then letting it go is gonna help BIG TIME for the team ya know?

so 8800GTS 512's are decent eh? Scaling it up the rig would be around £600-700 if im not mistaken?

Yeah, or less if you manage to find some used ones.
The GTS 512's are a step or two above the 8800GTs.

I'm currently waiting for some updates on GTs as my motherboard doesn't have space for more than two dual slot cards.

Edit: OMG, we're so in the same situation
I'm trading my 4850 with a guy for his 8800GT without charging him and I'm looking for someone who wants to take my E8500 for a Q6600..

Personally im just gonna buy the bits and keep them that way for a good few months... Just got a decent permanent job you see.

I just wanna see the outcome of this really

Does folding run on both GPU and CPU simultaneously then?

Oh it will and I'm not dogging your choice.
I was thinking pricing in the US and you can get an 8800GTS 512 for about the same price as an 8800GT. Not sure how pricing works in the UK.

To be honest Tuf im really struggling to find anything BAR the 9xxx series of Nvidia cards these days, Overclockers.co.uk is a prime site usually, but as of late, the stocks have just gone dead :\\

Perhaps look into getting 2 or 3 GTS250's and then upgrading as funds allow. In the US they are $129, all they are is 9800GTX+'s and they only require a 6 pin connector. Just a thought, when funds become available they should drop in price some and play well with what you have.

Thats not a bad idea really is it... Just gotta look at a pretty big PSU for that surely? 6600 + 3x250's? = 700 easy??

IIRC some guys are running 4GTS with a 650 watt psu. So I would imagine a good 700 watt single rail psu would be fine.

Yeah mate I know
im intending to setup a brand new i7 system with 2 4870's and quite abit of power, but its gonna be more a gaming/graphics system than a folder, so ill set that to fold when im asleep in the place known as bed!

Did some quick calculations last night and a decent 4 GPU folding rig will cost around £700 which is good... im sure I can just set it up so it connects to my 24" monitor like... once and then sits quite nicely down in the corner right?

Basically. I would check it once a day just to make sure all is well. Other than that start and forget.

Defiantly would buddy, would probably just rig an old 15" CRT to it or something, stick it in the corner and check it once a day and use a KVM to just switch over the keyboard and mouse.

Don't waste valuable real estate with a clunky CRT. Use LogMeIn to remotely check the PC and control it.
