Folding woes with sapphire 4850

795 Views 33 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  bucdan
Just installed [email protected] on my sig rig. CPU client runs pretty well. The GPU client on the other hand crashes after about 30 seconds in. I'm pretty sure it's not overheating, GPU core doesn't go above 82C for the most part.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just so the ATI guys and gals can help what drivers are you using?

I said eff it and went to bed, shut everything down. Didn't realize it put the gpu client in my startup, noticed about 20 minutes after bootup... it's running fine now!

I forgot about the windows cure-all. When in doubt, restart

If your card is overclocked, put it back to stock. [email protected] is very finnicky and will crash even when everything else seems stable. If it still crashes when it is stock, I don't know what else to say...

Nope, it's as stock as a...er... stock card

Makes me sad, cause when it was working I was getting like 3900 ppd, now I'm stuck with my CPU that actually gets 30-40 ppd less my girlfriend's laptop w/ a mobile sempron 3500+. wthell.
Cmon some of the ATI folder need to help this gent.

Just a thought have you completely wiped your drivers, uninstall, start in safe wipe with drivercleaner, reinstall?
I had problems folding when I tried the 9.2s. I ended up going back to 8.12s and haven't had a problem since.
It was a fresh install when I reformatted my system a couple of weeks ago, I haven't had any other driver versions on this system since. I'll try a wipe and reinstall of the drivers in the morning though, it's worth a shot

*edit*

rolling back the versions until I find a stable one looks like it'll be my best bet though

NP, maybe the 8.12's too like gig said.

that temperature seems a bit high, try running at a higher fanspeed for the card or running your sig rig with your sidepanel off to see if it doesnt lock up as much/at all

82C is hot. If I let this card go about 75C I'll start to see artifacts when web surfing.

Radeons will also shut down when their settings are out of sync, which maybe what is happening with your card (and when it does shut down, [email protected] will crash [this has happened to me if I use the GPU slider too often in the [email protected] options, as GPU shuts down, and has to restart again for every change]).

What does your [email protected] log state? See any UNSTABLE messages in there?

9.1 works fine (it's the same one you'll need to run 3DMark Vantage, too -- so use it if you're into benchmarking, too).

okie doke, at the moment, I've got my card's fan running at 90% (I reeeeally need an aftermarket cooler). [email protected] is running on the GPU, temps according to everest are 73 C Lets see how well/long this works.
are you reading the shader temp or the actual temp? the shader temp will never be below 69c when folding. My shaders are in the high 70's mid 80's, but the card temp is only really 68C

That sounds like better temps, hope it works!!

Thanks to the ATI folders for coming in. I know nothing about their [email protected] client.

These are what I'm reading...

yep, everest ultimate

Getting gpu-z atm

*edit*

Gpu-z downloaded, similar temps within +- 1C

But it seems like the temps are what was doing it. looks like I'll have to get a hold of an aftermarket cooler if I want to fold with my gpu, as much as I love the high pitched whir of the gpu fan heh

Thanks for the help everyone!
