What does this mean and how do I do it

It was suggested to me so I could get my sound card to possibly work. He couldn't explain how to do it because he had to leave...

not 100 percent sure, but from what i understand, windows takes over the mobo assigned irq's for most things, the normal 16 are there, but IRQ's can have up to hundreds in software(windows)

I could see how one would think that cuz back in the day when you literally could only have 16 irq's there was one that would clash w/ the soundcard...

so it osunds like it could be a different problem?
Well I've tried the sound card for basically everything I can think of. It's not borked, it just doesn't work for me.

I've narrowed it down to a BIOS flash as my last resort before an RMA, but I don't really wanna flash to a new BIOS.

why not flash a new bios? I update my bios as soon as a new version is released.

Also, is the model of card compatiable with the version of windows you are using?

Also, if its vista or 7, did you check the sound settings? i had a friend w/ a laptop that was sending all the sound to his HDMI output because of a setting in the sound control panel.

Maby its just a bad card? Can you try it in another computer with the same operating system?

Did you google for issues with the specific sound card you have for similar problems?

perhaps you are trying vista drivers?

Also one key question, is it showing up in your device manager and just no sound?
if so, is it showing up w/ a yellow !, or a red X? or is it not there at all?

Perhaps computer is recognizing it as the wrong type of card? 7 was trying to install a bad driver for an older printer i had and wouldnt let me update until i finally found an update from lexmark

I try not to flash to the newest BIOS for several reasons, mostly because my overclocks might need to be changed (f10e was horrible on this board) and I honestly don't think I need to fix something that works.

And for all three of you above me:

My problem is not that the card is not being detected or working right. I'm not even sure if it is because I can't check. The card, when installed, will not allow my PC to post. So I can't go anywhere on my computer. No bios, no Windows, no nothing.

And I don't have a problem with the card in a spare box. Boots up just fine an is detected by XP.
Everyone I've talked to with Win7 and this card haven't had this problem.

Could be a mobo problem? Can you try a similar pci card or something in that slot? maby try another slot?

Also, did you try calling Creative Labs? If its a new card they should offer support.

All the PCI slots work just fine. Using an ethernet card in one, and my wireless card in the another. Both work perfectly fine and have had no problems.

I think I'm just gonna RMA it, because it just seems to be more trouble than I feel like handling at the moment.
