The rundown is I left Shaw due to the wonderful decision of parents, current ISP sucks, latency spikes like no other and more problems. So Shaw was called to pick up their equipment, digital cable box, phone modem and internet modem, technication came and took all except the cable modem. He said, "you get to keep the modem".

That was almost a week ago, just now I went to the basement and plugged in the cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB5102) to the main cable line which is no longer used, what happened? I GOT A CONNECTION! Send, receive, and online lights sitting at a solid green

Whats that about? Would like some info before I try to find a 100ft cable to run it to my room.

*I DID NOTHING ILLEGAL TO THIS MODEM*

Lucky you. Go for it. It's not your fault. A while back, my family got free HBO for a few months. Then my next door neighbor got cable, and HBO went away.
you have internet until your term ends (the end of the month) because with broadband companies, you pay a month in advanced for your services.

well thats how rogers works at least, and im 99% sure that shaw is w/ rogers.
s-c-o-r-e!!!! heck no its not your fault , that internet is yours for the taking. lol

This. Your connection will remain until your service term expires. Technically your still using it with pre paid time.

if the service does go out, you could hack that modem as it is a perfect pick for hacking *cough*. i do not recommend trying.

edit: who are you with now?
I'm guessing they just haven't disabled your connection yet because you have the rest of the month to use it.

When Shaw was first connected it was on the 3rd of Sept 08 and since then bandwidth useage always reset on the 3rd would the term end on the 3rd as well? We left Shaw on Dec 1.

Shaw is separate from Rogers but I imagine their policies are similar. And yes, most people buy their cable modems these days (I still rent mine, but that's because if anything happens it's Shaw's fault
), so your keeping the modem is nothing unusual.

Reminds me of the time Telus killed my phone line (long story, short of it is that roomie's 900# calls effed a lot of stuff up for my payment schedules) and I couldn't reinstate it for a few months. Oddly, my voicemail box was still active as though the line had been terminated at the CO rather than just outright killed dead. So it was possible for people to call the central voice mail number and dial through and leave me messages

S'always nice when these little things happen.
