I have a friend thats a bar owner. He wants to set up some cameras at the bar and be able to watch from home or other places. I gather from what he said that the bartender and waitresses need an eye kept on them . Probably need about four cameras and Im not sure what else. Id appreciate any input as he wants to get this handled asap.

any modern Digital Video recorder commonly used for surveillance has ethernet abilities...

http://www.directron.com/dvcltd7704ht.html 4 channel...
needs SATA drive...

but...
http://www.directron.com/ltd851h6.html 8 channel...
needs SATA drive, and can be viewed with a 3G cell phone...

i'd go with the 8, the 4 can only be viewed on a computer...

now cameras... cameras are important... DO NOT BUY BUNDLED CRAP and think you are getting a good deal...

LTS High Power 240FT Long Range IR Camera, 540 TV Line Sony HQ1, 1/3in Sony Super HAD CCD, Japan Canon 8.0-40mm Varifocal Lens. Model: DVC-CMRH1060H.
good genral camera... HUGE the camera ~10 inches long -- love them, they last.

LTS High Power 150FT Long Range IR Camera, 540 TV Line Sony HQ1, 1/3in Sony Super HAD CCD, Japan Canon 8.0-22.0mm Varifocal Lens, 24VAC/12VDC Dual Voltage. Model: DVC-CMRH6040.
same thing, just lower power Lens and IR LEDs, a good choice and $25 less...

LTS 36 IR 75FT 1/3in SONY HAD CCD Camera, 540TVL High Resolution, w / Vary-Focal 4-9mm Lens and Cable Managed Bracket. Model: DVC-CMR603WHI.
good for interior, or anywhere the camera is not out of reach... fully enclosed cable... needs to be WALL MOUNTED

LTS 36 IR LED Color Dome Camera, 1/3 Sony High Resolution CCD, 550 TV Lines, Model: DVC-CMD708W.
great interior camera.

CCTV 12V DC DC Power Distribution Box for 18 Cameras. 10A, w/ 18 LED. P/N: PD1218
Pay the extra for this... uses circuit breakers instead of fuses... you short a lead, reset the power and it's good...

Plug 2.1mm Camera Power Connector, Model: POWER21MM
these turn bare wire into a nice power connector -- DO NOT CUT YOUR CAMERA LEADS to splice bare wire, you will void the warranty.

DO NOT SKIMP ON THE WIRE, use RG6 Siamese if you can find it.

Black Coaxial Cable CC-R595/95/1000FT, RG59U Bare Copper Coaxial 95% Braid Siamese, 1000', Wood Spool, w/ 18AWG 2 Conductors

you will always need more wire than you think. it's on a spool, so use a cable caddy

BNC RG59 Connector Fits on RG59 and RG6 Coax Cable

you'll need a compression tool for these fittings... they are a little harder to install than F connectors... but you need BNC and the other option is Bnc adapter - F connector - cable - F connector - bnc adapter -- costs more and has more points of failure. expect to destroy your first 3 fittings

Paladin Tools 1119 SureStrip Combo UTP/COAX Cutter/Stripper
THIS is THE stripper...
http://www.amazon.com/Paladin-Tools-.../dp/B000RPWOFC
holy crap, a deal! with The stripper and The crimper...

get a pair of micro flush cutters to trim the stinger to a beveled point

check if you need plenum rated cable for your installation to be fire code compliant...

Does your state require you be licensed to install security systems?
If they do, contract out the camera install, hook up the rest yourself.

don't forget to let your insurance know you have a video system... expect a 15% drop in premiums...

short of screws, holes, butt splice or wire nuts and some good electrical tape you're good...

Nice post!

Do most states require a licensed camera install? I had never heard of that before.

Some states even mandate that if you do not have at least 4 cameras your convenient store can not be 24 hours...

always check local regulations

not a problem, let me know if you have any other questions, or find any hardware you have questions about as i deal with a LOT of security kit.

normally, you get what you pay for...

there are also PC based analog and IP DVR solutions...

and the cameras just get bigger and better... and then still bigger and still better... fancy ones even come with wipers... and do crazy things like rotate 360 continuously on the pan and tilt...

+1 for an awesome post - LinError!
It all depends on how insane you want to get... but once you go past entry level it's all going to be IP based cameras... with insane price tags to go with their insane features...

and you need a ton of storage, and i do mean a ton... for a 30FPS 8MP beast like this...

you'd need about 3TB for 30 days for an active area...
