You may not be able to loop out. What is the IP. We can test for you.

I have a pretty nice server sitting around, and I finally decided to put it to good use. I am making it into an FTP server. I have Ubuntu 8.10 Server installed and an FTP Server program installed everything is set up and working properly in my LAN, but when I try to connect with my external IP it fails.
[ftp://<myIP>]
Port 21 is forwarded on my router and open on the server. Can I not user my external IP?
What is wrong?

some router do not support loopback
