Acer readying beastly DirectX 11 notebook

Core i7 and Mobility HD 5850 in 18.4 inches

We were expecting to see the first mobile Evergreens in an Alienware or something, but Acer seems bent on establishing a presence in the insane high-end market.

We're not huge fans of gaming notebooks and we would buy this one in a million years, but we have to respect the sheer lunacy of the Aspire 8942G-728G1280TWN. Powered by a Core i7-720QM at 1.6GHz, it packs 8GB of DDR3, two 640GB hard drives and Blu-ray to boot. It features an 18.4-inch LED display in 1980x1080 and then we come to its piece de resistance, AMD's Mobile Radeon HD5850 with 1GB of GDDR5. Basically, this is the first notebook with DirectX 11 graphics, and pretty good graphics at that.

In terms of connectivity, you get pretty much everything you could ask for...

Yeah but will it shatter if you look at it crosseyed? lol jk, really tho that is pretty beast.
Just don't sit that thing on a wood table. You'll burn your house down.

EDIT: I meant to ask this earlier. Do the mobile versions of ATI's GPU's offer the same or close to the same performance of their desktop counter parts? I know this is not the case with Nvidia and was wondering if it was the same for ATI.
Dayum...that lappy is crazy.
Heh, no USB 3.0? Not really impressed...

Well, they are usually a step down.

Mobility HD4850 was a little bit faster than the HD4830, but not quite as fast as the desktop HD4850.

I kinda feel the same. Shoulda waited a bit on this.

Besides, are we not supposed to have 32nm chips soon from Intel?

It seems like an i5 with switchable graphics & this setup would have been a better option though.

Also, I much rather would have seen 2 SSD's & 1 large HDD in this.
I mean if you were really going for a beast machine that would been the way to go.

Exactly. Seems like a high end of a last generation. I'm sure the price tag is massive, and I couldn't justify this with better things coming out so soon.

I'm sure (almost certain even) that the Core i7 mobile counterparts will be better than the 32nm with integrated graphics.

I want it... mmmm... power... I want MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just don't like the idea of a 1.6ghz processor even if it is an I7QM.

Yea me either. I'll take a core 2 duo at 3.0ghz for gaming on a laptop anyday. I don't care if it does have 8 threads you still need some sortof of clock speed for games.

-ATI's Mobility parts, in the 4xxx generation anyway, are much more closely related to their desktop counterparts than Nvidia's. They always use the same SP count as their desktop counterpart, but they are often clocked significantly lower, while Nvidia tends to rank its mobile gpus independently of its desktop parts, but use the same names (128 SP core on desktop is a GTS250, but on a laptop its a GTX260m and clocked lower).

I see no reason for the trend to change, especially when ATI's 40nm parts conserve power so well.

It has turbo boost of 2.8GHz tho.

Now we just need a 2.0GHz Core i7 mobile

lol @ throwing a 5850 chip in with a 1.6GHz cpu. Thousands of dollars to buy a bottlenecked laptop.
Clock speed has nothing to do with anything. Compare a 4 GHz Pentium 4 to a 2 GHz Core i7. The P4 doesn't stand a chance, in ANYTHING. So i'd take a 1.6 GHz i7 over a 3 GHz Core 2 Duo.

Uh...has 2.8ghz turbo mode....

1.6ghz is for power save....

Plus there was an article recently that showed a 2.0GHz i7 920 barely even bottlenecked a 5970.
