Cebit 2013: No DirectX 12

In case you have been wondering what comes after DirectX 11.1, the next big iteration is currently known as DirectX blue. The blue comes from the Windows Blue codename that Microsoft has for the ninth major iteration of Windows.
Upcoming graphics hardware will definitely go down the blue road, but at this point we don't what will be the major difference between DirectX 11 and DirectX blue. Both Nvidia and AMD are working on DirectX Blue chips as we speak, but they are still quite a long way off.

Using such a codename for Windows is nothing short of ironic, due to Windows blue screen conotations. Also, it brings back fond memories of a famous Redmond demonstration that made Bill Gates even more popular. Of course, the USB printer demonstration failed and ended with a blue screen, in front of some rather amused members of the press.

In any case, DirectX blue is the future of graphics and it is coming in 2014, or perhaps even later.

That's a wee bit of a stretch.

i don't understand how the industry is still 90% in DX9
you'd think DX10 would have majority by now....I mean that came out a year after xbox 360 so really why haven't the devs moved on?

So now DirectX Blue can cause a Blue Screen of Death while you use Windows Blue.

The hardware in current gen consoles is DX9 era, and most games are built around such a feature set.

What I really want to know is who at Microsoft has a fetish for the word/colour blue?

Next thing you now Microsoft will be renamed Blue.

Only to go from 8 -> Blue, after that you'll have to pay for each set up updates each year.

Latest rumors also have Windows 9 as a standalone system.

Source is everyone that's been reporting on Windows Blue. Windows Blue is to be a yearly paid update system. That's not changed since it was first announced.

Google it, pick a source; here's 2 that tell of the yearly updating much like Apples current system;

All I see from those is "could be free or could be low cost." Nothing confirmed, and I'll wait for appropriate confirmation before making any judgements.

I tried finding an article that confirmed updates would cost money. Can't find any, care to find one for me?

If they're free I'll be ok with that. Or something low like £10. Anything over that and I'm out.
