G.Skill Debate, 8GB 1600MHZ vs 6GB 2000MHZ

1925 Views 31 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  SgtSpike
Should I get 8GB of G.Skill of 1600MHZ for 165$ (today at Newegg!!) or wait, and get 6GB of G.Skill 2000MHZ (goes for 205$ now).

Is the 2000MHZ really that much worth it? Would getting two additionnal GB with 1600 compensate?

Really looking forward towards your input guys, thanks a lot!

I doubt you'd notice a difference between 1600 and 2000mhz. I'd say go for the 8GB.
isn't the 8GB for dual channel and the 6GB for tri-channel? what is the voltage of the 8GB?
Dunno, the 2000Mhz is Trident
maybe some links to the ram?
ok, well the 8GB would use 1.6v, so that's fine...I thought it was like 1.8 or something

are you gonna run it dual channel in your i7 rig? I'd rather just find a 3x2 kit of 1600MHz with similar timings to put in there

See, I don't really understand that thoroughly the different ways to make RAM work.
i.e. Dual channel vs Triple channel...

I just stick the 4 x 2GB in the MOBO and hope it works..
lol...

well, the 8GB should work fine in there I think, but x58's are optimised for triple channel RAM...

although, I'm not sure if you CAN use 4 sticks for dual channel, since there's only 3 channels with 2 sticks per channel...

let me find you some 3x2 1600MHz RAM, just a sec
ok, here you go

still G.Skill, unless you want another brand

3x2 8-8-8-24 $179.99

3x2 6-7-6-18 $209.99

the first one is more available, the second will give you a bit more performance if you want it

their site is slow during the day these days, for me anyway...no idea why, unless they got a huge increase in traffic
you don't understand running 3 or 6 vs 2 or 4 sticks? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145236

Ahh, yea, I failed to realize that it is not 2 x 3GB, but 3 x 2 GB, so in factors of 3 and not 2 (for triple channel).

Well, that was pretty simple, is triple channel better than double in some way?
Core i7's don't run friendly with 8 GB's so, yeah, there is your answer.

higher bandwidth, other than that I can't think of anything

I voted the G.Skill Trident 2000. I agree with other posts that there is not nuch of a performance difference from 1600 to 2000, but I run my 2000 kit at 1611 6-7-6-18 1T. With the 2000 kit, you can run 1600 at much tighter timings.

Ok, yea, I see, so this set will get me good timings when lowered to 1600MHZ. Nice, so I think I will go with the 2000MHz Trident. Now I just need to find it for a decent price somewhere. If anyone knows of any really good online shops, be it American or Canadian, please link them up! I'm going to try and price match with NCIX.

I bought them for $135 when they were first released (check out the first newegg review on them). Now they have gone up; first to $150, then to $180 and even up to $200. Now they are listed at $194 with free shipping at newegg:

And this kit is certified to work with your board, which is a plus!

The 6gb set for sure. The i7 920 is optimized for use with triple-channel RAM.
Go for 6GB kit.
