G-Skill or Ballistix Tracer?

936 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  lsdmeasap
I've used G-Skill for years and never had a bad experience. I'm purchasing this EVGA board and I own a red/black HD5870. The G-Skill ram is red, and the Ballistix is blue. I would like to keep the red/black scheme, but the Ballistix has 8-8-8-24 and the G-Skill has 9-9-9-24. Is there any performance difference between the two? Price is identical.

G-Skill

Ballistix

there was a time when ballistix was great memory to have but somewhere down the road they just nosedived in reliability with every new batch they manufactured. on the other hand, every set of g.skill i have ever used/owned has never done me wrong.

that aside, i have used both of those particular sets of RAM in two different client builds and i can confirm my previous statement in saying that the g.skill (despite having higher timings) were more reliable when OC'ing

g.skill has got my vote

Agreed, Ballistix used to be amazing, but they've really taken a nose dive. These days it's a crap shoot just trying to get one that works.

G-Skill's always been solid. they've got my vote.

G-Skill it is! Hoorah.
G-skill in a heartbeat.
I reviewed those Ballistix, maybe this could help you decide. Most of ballistix's bad press is due to the DDR2 issues as of late

Ive used Gskill in dozens of builds and have yet to have a bad stick, so I would have to say go with we all know works.

Unfortunately, despite what NewEgg says, the G-Skill 1600 tri-channel kit is out of stock. I just had my third order cancelled by them in the last 24 hours. I still love the Egg, but I carry a frown face.

Your review swayed me to the Ballistix. I also ordered an Antec 1200, so the blue LED's will match nicely. Thank you all for your help, and thanks Deagle for the killer deal on the i7. I love this forum.

I use all Ballistix. They had one questionable batch in DDR2 and fixed it. Chances are I build more rigs than most people here
So if there were issues I of all people would have problems.

if you doubt me go to www.outoftheboxmods.com and count the builds
no problems.

I agree, the Ballistix had a rough time with their DDR2 line. But I still have a computer I built for a friend running 4x1Gb Ballistix Tracers, and they are running strong. I just dont run them above 2.0v.

Ballistix had some compatibility issues with the x38/x48 chipsets, which also made them drop in popularity.

From what I have read, the DDR3 Ballistix are fine, and should be perfect for the OP's build.

OP, post a review after you've had a chance to test them so others on OCN can see if they are worth getting.

Will do, but it won't be immediate. I expect to have the build up by Thursday, but I have to learn how to OC an i7. Once I get it stable, this will be the first review I post. I have a feeling I'm in a whole different world now moving from my AMD965 rig.

To be honest, i7 OCing has matured quite a bit. It should be relatively easy now. A year ago, before there was so much complied data, it was quite challenging. But you should get the hang of it quite quickly. Just check out the voltage recomendations, settings and guides posted on OCN.

Hell **** no. OCZ is the WORST RAM I have ever purchased, right next to Geil. Nothing against you, I appreciate the help (+rep). I just had to vent.

EDIT: I've also already purchased the Ballistix sticks.

G.Skill kits are usually tightly binned, so I would stay away from them.

And what was wrong with the OCZ memory you purchased? I had a bad kit from them once, and they RMA'ed it fine. Their rebates come through and the user forums are very helpful. Every manufacturer has defects now and then but they took care of it promptly for me. I fail to see why you would hate OCZ.

Multiple RMA's and cryptic foreign tech support. Newegg gave me my money back, and I bought some G-Skill. It was just a bad experience, and my venting wasn't very reasonable. Sorry about that.

Most of the tech support are native English speakers (I thought at least.) Tony is from England I know. I see why you wouldn't like them now
Good luck with those sexy Ballistix

Nice to see the review helped you decide. While they may not be the best timed kits out there I think for the price, quality, superb looks, and stability these modules they are a great choice!
