Game for Radeon 9250.

Hey everyone. My little bro is travelling 400miles from his home to come visit me over march break. I'm really excited but other than Freelancer and Red Alert 2, I don't have any PC games to play over lan with him. Unfortunately the second computer in my apartment I have right now is only a P4, 3.0ghz, 1Gb of RAM, and a 128mb Ati Radeon 9250 (AGP).

Can anyone recommend any games that we could play together so i can go shopping before he gets here? Any suggestions that have Lan play would be great. I can look into the details myself and choose what would be best for us. Thanks guys and girls.

CS:S will play on that...that's almost the exact rig I started playing source on. And of course UT 2004 plays on about anything =P
Oh, man... The good old 9200 series. That was the gfx card I put in my first purely self-built rig. I think if you set the AGP speed to 4x in the bios (from 8x), BF2 would play at 1024x768 (but the support bug in BF2 didn't allow for the agp bus at 8x with the radeon 9200 series cards IIRC).

Second CS:S (though I've never actually played it). Ideally I'd suggest TF2, though I don't know that I'd be confident in suggesting it given the hardware of the other computer. Though with a simple gfx card update, it'd probably be fine. I think if you're playing with someone you know and are sitting with, TF2 is great fun!

EDIT--Starcraft would play just fine though. Not sure how much you're into SC. Oh, and have fun!

Anything based on the source engine will run, e.g. left for dead, team fortress 2 etc. Command and conquer generals, far cry (can be found on the rack for like $5 some times), alien vs predator 2 (if you can find it), the splinter cell games (although the newest ones will have to be a very low detail). Probably tons more, it would help if we knew what games he liked.

edit: oh ya starcraft and diablo 2 will run no problems as well.

Very good suggestions so far guys... I didn't know I could play L4D on that rig!

My bro is into games like World in Conflict, Command and Conquer, Freelancer, Flight Simulator, any WWII based.

You will have to run it on Low settings at a lower resolution if it would run at all.

L4D rapes single core processors. I have an athlon 64 3500 rig with an x1950 and it has a hard time with medium settings at 1440x900.

Just my .02. Source is easy on computers but it will still dominate that lowly 9200 series card.

Diablo / 2
Counter Strike and CS:S
Starcraft
Red Alert
Titan Quest (on lower settings)
UT 2003
Giants Citizen Kabuto
Age Of Empires
Call of Duty / 2
Dungeon Siege / 2

Neither did I.

Dman--you sure it'll play things like L4D and TF2?

OP--what res is the monitor that the older rig will be using?

My second rig is only on a 15inch CRT with max res of 1024x768

No, Left4Dead requires a more powerful GPU, not to mention the CPU requirements of the zombie AI, and dynamic content generation.

Far Cry is SLOW, but relatively smooth, at least around 1024 x 768.
This is from experience with my Radeon 9250, with a 1GHZ PIII.

You can play source engine games on a Radeon 9250, but you may have to turn the details down quite a bit. I've used a 9550 256MB, and IIRC, had to turn the details down to ~medium (or less) in CS:S and HL2 to get playable frame rates. My 9700Pro even has issues maxing them out without some stutters. EDIT: This is @ 1024x768 resolution with an Athlon XP 2500+ and 1GB DDR400.

You could consider CS 1.6 or Call of Duty 2, you'd easily be able to play those game smoothly.
What about if i borrowed a GeForce 8400Gs PCI-E for the weekend. (Yes my MOBO has both agp and PCI-E) (PCI-e is only 4x)
Half Life/ Half Life Deathmatch would work well, possibly not the Source version, though.
Source is a little close to the edge of playability.
I still play FreeLancer

The 8400GS would be a better alternative, still not very powerful. Thought at least L4D will run on it.

The 9250 will definitely struggle with the TF2 and even more so with L4D. I would suggest some older RTS' AoE, CnC and such.

Agreed. If you have access to the 8400, it's a better card, though will still limit what settings you can use.

OP--what games does your bro like to play?

Starcraft/warcraft/diablo is pretty fun to play lan games, I actually have a 9250 in a backup computer (not for long, its overdue for an upgrade).

CS/CS:S, DoD/DoD:S will run on the card (very low resolutions). My friend used it up until a few months ago and we regularly played on many steam games.
My bro likes to play RTS, FPS, and Flight games...

As long as the games are playable in lan. Our Favorites are co-op campaigns however
I used to used a 9250 256mb when i first got into computers. Mine played CS:S, HL2, TS2, Guild Wars, a few other Dx9 games and any dx8 game will play on it.

Pretty much anything pre-2003ish should be playable @ 1024x768. Max Payne was a good game from around that time that should run pretty well.

Deus Ex
Red Faction 2 (lots of fun making tunnels)
Carmageddon 1 & 2
Black & White
System Shock 2
Soldier of Fortune
Alien vs Predator 2
Pretty much all the Source games except L4D. It requires Pixel Shaders 2.0. The 9250 although a 9 series card only has Pixel Shaders 1.4, it is a DX8 card basically (8500).
