games running slowly

As the title says I have a problem with games running slowly, especially Crysis, but only when my computer has been on for a while. Even if I close all open programs it will be extremely sluggish while playing a graphically intense game.
If I restart and go back into the game it will run flawless.
I would assume that this would be caused by other programs hogging resources, but most of the time I close everything before I start up the game.
Any ideas why this is happening?

Dominant, interesting issue. After noticing the slow downs how much memory is available? You can view this by going into your Task Manager->Performance tab. Look under "Physical Memory". Have you tried running a Memtest86+ to rule out any memory issues? I prefer tests 5 and 8 each for at least 15-25 minutes. Perhaps a memory leakage is occurring. Are there any background applications running that could also be poorly coded that may cause a memory leak? These of course are extreme scenarios. All though I do find it interesting that your issues were cleared up after a reboot which either suggests a memory or application/windows related issue. I would also check the event viewer to see if any errors are listed. You can access the event viewer by right clicking on My Computer->Manage. Under System Tools you should see a folder called "Event Viewer".

Let us know

Good luck

Heat? Sounds like it's building up while putting the GPU under load.. What's your GPU temps idle and then while ingame?

You can use tools such as RivaTuner to have an OSD (OnScreen Display) that you can monitor while you play. Things slowing down or crashing "over time" especially while in heavy graphic gaming is typical heat throttle.

Agreed he may have to use Rivatuner and juice up the fan speed to cool that bad boy down.

Dominant, how long are you able to play after a restart until it starts to run "sluggish" again?

Good luck

You are using Windows.

Am I the only one who thinks it could be that Windows just needs to be rebooted now and again?
I have the same video card as you, but I haven't notice any problems with it. I suggest to test your directx.

GodofGrunts, good suggestion. How much up-time does each reboot see is a good question

I closed all programs and my available memory was 1508000, after a restart it was 1653000. This does not seem like enough of a difference to slow down my games that much.
I don't think that heat is a problem, I run the gpu fan at 70% and my house is generally pretty cold. I will use the OSD next time I play though.
I haven't run a memtest in a while so I will give that a go and get back to you.

Edit: just read all the posts that happened while I was typing.
If the memtest checks out maybe I will have to run a little test to see if Crysis runs better after 10, 20, 30 mins etc.

Also, Godofgrunts, I have also always thought that windows just needed to be restarted after a while. I remember thinking that way back with windows 95.
Good deal Dominant.. let us know your results of some temp and memtests

well memtest ran without any errors, so I guess ill have to do some temp checking.

edit: 100th post! took me a long time to get this far
try scanning your system with spypot search and destroy...maybe any malware, spyware ? coz this happened to me once

Dominant, let us know if you're able to test this. I'm very curious to see the results.

Good luck

When Crysis originally came out didn't it have some sort of memory leak?

Try patching it up to version 1.2; might help things a bit.
