GAMING: How Much Difference Does OC Contribute?

Hi, I have some uncertainties, with regards to overclocking for gaming, which is what I usually do on my computer.

I've heard that increasing clock speed of the processor does not contribute much to increased performance with regards to games, rather overclocking the graphics card does.

Same goes for overclocking RAMs, some say it does not have much effect too.

Any truth in this? Some discussion would be much appreciated

BTW: Currently on my E5200 @ 2.944GHz, VCore of 1.2.

Edit: I have a 3DMark06 result of 11229, is that fine?

It depends on the game. Some games rely on the Graphics card being top notch, where others depend on the CPU being top notch. So it's not a simple Yes/No answer.

Thanks for the quick reply. But how about on a general scope? [Exclude Crysis if you must

maybe about 5-10% if you get a good 1.2ghz+ OC
Well i'm only a newbie to all this but I think you need both a good CPU and a good GPU as if you have a bad CPU the GPU will bottleneck.

Hmm true, kind of a compromising thing. Hopefully my 4850 works well with my E5200, though as I played Spiderman: Web of Shadows I was experiencing quite frequent spikes.

crysis benifits alot from overclocks on both cards and CPU
It really depends on the graphics engine used.

For example, the Source engine is incredibly CPU dependent.
For myself, my Mac version of CoD4 takes 17 seconds to load from desktop > Menu when at stock, but overclocked, takes 7 seconds.

Yeah definitely think so too, hopefully it'll run well when I install it. So far into Spiderman & Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 seems relatively smooth, seemingly more smooth than Spiderman.

Dude crank up that E5200 you have a lot of room left!

Increasing the cpu frequency will allow the video card (especially your 4850) to show it's true potential so I think it is definitely worth it if you are looking to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your system. Good Luck!
The gains won't by any means be a show stopper but it is there none the less.

CPU overclocking only helps to increase the performance in games if your CPU at current speeds is limiting the potential of your graphic card- bottle necking. Or if you have a very weak CPU and is being pushed to its limits during game play at current speeds. None of these two apply to your rig so overclocking it further wont give you any performance boost in games

Yeah got afew comments from some OC.net pros on my MSN, told me to go further even though I'm on stock cooler.

Definitely will try it out soon, since E5200's kinda leet in OC-ing.

Thanks for the informative post man. So I assume, the gains even if I OC further are very marginal?

Yeah man, your at a sweet spot now pretty much. If overclocking more on your cpu or graphics card you won't really notice much more of an improvement imo.
11k in xp with an 5200 and 4850 is pretty low dude, crank up that e5200

Exactly. Once you get to the state when your GPU/CPU are in balance and not bottle necking each other you wont see much improvement by overclocking the cpu further. Try to OC your GPU instead! That will give you nice performance boost.

Here is what i got on 3dmark06 with a system almost similar with yours just that the cpu was at 3.5Ghz http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=8782184

WOW, if you're getting those spikes with YOUR system, then...alright, to hell with the spikes in MY system

OC more will help i went from 3.2Ghz to 3.8Ghz(E6420 to E7300) and i saw around a 4FPS difference in Crysis and i get 3FPS difference in WIC and 2FPS in COH:OP and some improvement in COD4(not that it matters as i get 100FPS anyways)
