Gateway FX P-7805u vs Asus G50Vt-X1, which one is better for me?

Alright here is my quandary; I am getting back around $1,300 after filing my taxes 3 weeks ago, and like any good college student I want to spend it on a toy and not save it. After doing much research I was pretty much decided on the Gateway fx P-7805u, but I recently looked again at the specs of the Asus G50Vt-X1.

The Gateway is obviously the better all around package, larger higher res screen and slightly better GPU, but my desktop pc, is getting old and I am thinking I would like to replace it. If I get the G50Vt-X1 I will be left over with enough money to build me a nice x3 720 build to replace my desktop and get the laptop.

The lower res and according to reviews lower quality lcd on the G50Vt-X1 are a bit of a turn off for me. I plan to use the what ever laptop I get for school work, lan parties, and gaming at my gf's house (where I spend most of my time).

I am still leaning heavily towards the FX, what do you all think?

On a side note I have heard that the ASUS has a 9800m gt and not a 9800m gs, which would mean almost double the number of steam processor and the asus would then be the hands down winner. Also is it possible, and fairly easy, to upgrade the lcd in a laptop?

I am almost sure that the gateway will be a better performer. I can even vouch got the FX series, being that I own one and love it! Check out the Gateway FX thread to see a little more about it too.

FX ftw!
I would go with the FX, I have a FX-7811 and very happy with it, its pretty much as the 7805 but has more memory. They say its a desktop replacement, from what i understand from the forums that you can also upgrade the cpu with a intel mobile quad processor, i think its the qx9300. Good luck with your decision.
I have the AsusG50vt-X5 and I love it. The screen res is lower..but that is awesome in my book and here is why.

I can max my games at my screens max res which is great in my book. Where as if I had a screen res higher than I would possibly have to turn down some settings.

And that the plan that you are talking about with saving money and building a new desktop. Well that is exactly what I wanted to do and I did just that.

I sold my Current desktop(AMDx2-6000, ATI HD4870 1GB) and built an AMD x3 8650 system for 300 dollars. and got the laptop for $1000.00 dollars from Bestbuy.

In a nut shell I love this laptop.

PS I did not read all the post

Yeah looks like a good laptop, I ended up getting the gateway as you can see. Will be building a phenom II 940 build pretty soon tho in the next few months to replace my athlon 4800+.

I do not know much about the Asus, however I got a Gateway Fx laptop P-173X FX and I think it is amazing. I got it with 2.2 core 2 duo, nvidia 8800m gts card, 4 gigs ram, esata, hdmi, 250gb hard drive vista ultimate 64 bit, microsoft office, webcam, dvd burner, 3 year tech support(they answer the phone instantly it's amazing!!), 3 year accidental damage all for $1800. I do not think any other computer company can sell a laptop with those specs anywhere near that price. i have recently played prince of persia, dead space, and fallout 3 on it and they all run perfectly and look amazing. crysis struggled a little but still was playable.
I Love this laptop.....
