I can understand why they are there. Colleges, Universities, and the powers that be in the government want all students to have a basic background of knowledge. Some of it will even be useful to me when I am employed. But some of it is total crap.

Right now, I am at a Junior College. The Gen-Ed classes are led by professors who were obviously not good enough for a 4 year school, at least in my situation. One in particular likes to have random tests, with an entire day's notice. I will be going to a 4 year next fall, I will be a technology education major at Illinois State University.

Back to my rant... with that major, why do I need to take Earth Science, Biology, Art History, Geography, and some other random ones I cannot remember. The reason I am so torqued about this is I have 3 tests in as many classes on Wednesday, and it is just too much work, especially for a Junior College.

All of these Gen-Ed classes are needed?

A well rounded education is much more valuable than it may seem. One of the biggest complaints employers have about engineers, for example, is that although they can do all of the mathematical stuff well, most can't write a decent sentence. You don't want to be too narrowly focused in your studies - it will show
